PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Donny Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gustavo Santos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gustavo Santos told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Donny Paul!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo Santos !
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Luis Engracia and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Santos tries to clinch

and Paul counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Paul.
Santos looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Santos tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Paul just stands there and leans against the cage.

Paul breaks from the clinch.
Santos darts in trying to clinch
and Paul counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Paul shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Paul gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Paul changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Santos looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Paul cracks Santos with a big right hand but Santos just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Paul has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Santos misses the shot to the body.
Santos rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Paul moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Gustavo Santos is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Santos wants to clinch

and Paul counters with a single leg into guard. Santos didn't expect that.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Paul decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Santos tries to clinch but Paul moves away

and Paul holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

Paul ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Paul no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Paul manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Santos manages to get himself to full guard.
Paul is working Santos over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Paul gets to his feet. Santos looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Paul shoots in and bounces Santos off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Paul stands and steps away. Santos gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Paul has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Santos is working an open guard so Paul takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Paul is trying to trip Santos . He has hold of a leg but Santos is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Paul persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Paul decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Paul shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Santos manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Santos is fighting off a takedown attempt but Paul is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Santos to the mat. Santos regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Paul decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Santos , up you get!

Santos gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Santos stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Santos throws a right and a left that both miss.

Paul manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Santos on his heels. He'll look to pass Santos 's guard now, I'm sure.
Paul could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Paul throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Santos tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Paul is in Santos 's guard.

Paul bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Paul shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Paul showed some decent athleticism there.

Santos throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Well Paul has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
