PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Kory Reeves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Austin Wheeler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kory Reeves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Austin Wheeler!
The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Trevor Gratis and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Wheeler.
Wheeler throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Wheeler closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Wheeler blocks the strikes from Reeves.
Wheeler is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Wheeler in particular looking to stall.
Reeves really is a fat lump.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Reeves wants to control but Wheeler is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Reeves landing small, sideways elbows.
Reeves has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Wheeler is working away from the top position though.
Reeves keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Wheeler is trying to control the action in half guard but Reeves is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Wheeler connects with a nice short shot to Reeves's temple.

Wheeler looks to land a strike but Reeves avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Reeves has momentary wrist control but Wheeler slips an elbow through the middle.
Wheeler not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Wheeler wants to stand but Reeves is controlling his posture from full guard.
Wheeler wants to control from the top but Reeves keeps moving.

Reeves is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Wheeler throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Wheeler gets to his feet. Reeves looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Wheeler lands a big head kick that sends Reeves tumbling to the mat! Wheeler takes a step backwards and waves Reeves back to his feet - he wants the finish!


It looks like Kory Reeves has been cut.
Reeves fails to land the takedown.
Wheeler throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Reeves.
Reeves shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Wheeler defends it nicely.
Reeves is breathing heavily.

Wheeler feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Wheeler stays in close to Reeves's body and controls the position.
Wheeler works over Reeves with some ground and pound from guard.

Wheeler gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Wheeler will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Wheeler shoots in and gets a takedown into Reeves's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wheeler advances to half guard.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Wheeler drops an elbow to the side of Reeves's head.
Ground and pound from Wheeler.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Wheeler looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Reeves with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Reeves is trying to control but can't.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Austin Wheeler dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Kory Reeves's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Wheeler has taken the fight to the clinch.

Wheeler works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Wheeler is working Reeves over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Wheeler is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Reeves wants to sweep but no luck.
Wheeler trying to control the position from guard on top but Reeves is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Wheeler sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Reeves's guard.
Austin Wheeler has got the better of the ground game so far.
Reeves on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Wheeler has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Reeves keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Wheeler is trying to control. Reeves wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Wheeler winds up and cracks Reeves with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Reeves wants to control but Wheeler is keeping busy.
Reeves is looking to improve his position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Wheeler is trying to work for a kimura but Reeves is defending well.
Ground and pound from Wheeler.
Reeves is looking to control Wheeler's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Reeves avoid being mounted?
Wheeler lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wheeler takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Reeves is not content to let Wheeler control the position.
Wheeler lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Wheeler looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Reeves is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Wheeler scores with a couple of nice shots.

Well, if Wheeler is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Oh Reeves is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Wheeler prevents Reeves from improving his position.
Wheeler perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Wheeler lands a nice short elbow.

Wheeler decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
BOOM! Wheeler lands a beautiful left hook that drops Reeves. Reeves tries to recover but Wheeler is having none of it, landing more punishing shots from mount. One final crushing shot and Reeves lies motionless on the canvas. The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:30 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Austin Wheeler!
Austin Wheeler seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
