PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Mack (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Curry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Johnny Mack!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Curry!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Lou da Vinci and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mack shoots in for a takedown but Curry shows good takedown defense.

Mack drives through with a takedown into guard.

Mack avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Mack trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Curry wants to sweep but no luck.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mack looking to pass the guard.
Mack missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Mack has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Curry wants to sweep here but Mack controlling him for the moment.
Mack postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Curry not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Curry wants to sweep but no luck.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Mack fails to land with a series of punches.
Curry misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Mack misses with a two punch combination.
Mack tries to close the distance and clinch up but Curry swats him away and circles back towards the center.

Mack scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Curry has eaten all the pies!
Curry sneaks back into half guard.
Mack thows a huge punch but Curry dodges it nicely.

Mack seems to be working for a kimura but Curry defends the submission attempt.
Mack misses with a head shot. Curry uses the momentum to regain guard.
Mack trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Mack preventing the sweep.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Mack is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Curry is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Curry has escaped and now he's on top!
Mack is breathing heavily.

Mack looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Curry stands and steps away. Mack gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Mack swats away the attempt to clinch by Curry.

Mack feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Curry is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Mack is controlling him.
Curry manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mack manages to get himself to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Curry wants to pass the guard but Mack is keeping the position.

Curry slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Curry sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Mack's guard.
Mack slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Mack escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Curry gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Mack has an active guard here but Curry has managed to pass into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Curry works his way into side control.

Curry stands up and beckons Mack to his feet.
Mack tries to clinch but Curry moves away

and Curry counters with a nice double leg into side control. Mack won't be happy with that.

Curry is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mack has escaped the position, nice work there.
Mack gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Curry blocks the strikes from Mack.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Curry dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Curry scores with a hook.

Curry has managed to clinch.
Mack tries to pull guard but Curry won't allow it.
Mack is working for takedown but Curry is calmly controlling the position for now.

Mack pulls Curry into guard.
Mack thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Curry is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Mack will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Curry stands and steps away. Mack gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

and Mack counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mack.
Curry is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Mack thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Curry escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mack gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Curry looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mack is one step ahead there.
Johnny Mack overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Curry not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Curry utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Curry trying to keep a closed guard but Mack is proving a slippery customer.
Mack throws a big right hand that misses.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Curry slips a jab and a cross from Mack.

Mack changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Curry looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Mack in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Mack connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Curry some visible discomfort.

Mack tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Mack working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Curry keeping his opponent close.
Curry is looking to regain half guard here but Mack keeps moving and retains side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Curry digs a good body shot into Mack's ribs.
Mack swats away the attempt to clinch by Curry.
Mack misses with a double jab

and Curry counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Curry.

Mack breaks from the clinch.

Curry bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Mack manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Mack is pressing down on Curry's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Mack is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mack is working hard here to advance position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Johnny Mack will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

and Curry counters with a shoot takedown. Mack fights it but they end up in guard.
Curry trying to control the position from guard on top but Mack is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Curry gets to his feet - Mack follows without any prompting.

Mack shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Mack works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Mack takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Mack with the ground and pound but Curry uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Mack in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Mack passes easily into side control. Nice work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Curry tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mack working the ground and pound.
Mack looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Curry is avoiding damage well.
Mack throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Mack thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Curry stops Mack from passing to mount.
Curry manages to work his way to half guard, despite Mack's best efforts.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Mack is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Curry moves into full guard.
Curry pulls Mack in close to prevent any damage.
Curry preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Curry avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Curry utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Curry pushes Mack off and scrambles back to his feet.
Some wild striking there from Curry.
Mack lands a jab-cross combination.
Mack misses with a takedown
and Curry counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Mack closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Mack has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Mack is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Curry can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Mack throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mack misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Curry can't escape the position.

Mack goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Curry turns into him and now he's in Mack's guard.
Mack is striking off his back. Curry thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.
Mack is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Curry's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Curry's back!
Curry rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to John Curry.
Well Curry has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
