These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rockford fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Shields, pushing him back against the cage.

Rockford breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Shields shoots in but Rockford avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Rockford tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Shields defends well and Rockford ends up having to push Shields into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Shields tries to pull guard but Rockford forces him back to his feet, against the cage.

Rockford is trying to trip Shields. He has hold of a leg but Shields is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Rockford persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rockford accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Rockford is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Shields defends it well.
Rockford uses his free foot to push down on Shields's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Shields.
