PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Vitor Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Antonio Davis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Davis is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Franz Ferdinand - Ulysses. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 24 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Vitor Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 16 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Antonio Davis!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, William Peck and Gregory Folan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gracie tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Gracie looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Davis misses with a two punch combination.
Davis connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Gracie's hands.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Davis sprawls well. Davis wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet.
Davis throws a jab when Gracie was well out of range.
Davis looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Davis will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Davis lands an overhand right.
Gracie displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Davis throws out the jab.
Davis loads up on a big right hand but Gracie slips the punch.
Davis misses with a wild body shot.
Davis lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

Davis works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
Gracie shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Davis defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vitor Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Davis takes a swing at Gracie's ribcage but misses.
Davis misses with a hook. Gracie ducked under it nicely.
Gracie keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Gracie moves into range and clinches up with Davis.
A short body shot lands from Davis as the two fighters clinch.
Gracie blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Davis misses with a hook from the clinch.

Davis gets through Gracie's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.

Gracie jumps guard and drags Davis to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Davis got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gracie has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Davis has managed to get both his arms back between Gracie's legs - danger averted.
Gracie is striking from the bottom but Davis uses the opportunity to pass into half guard.
Gracie wants to sweep but Davis has passed to side control!
Gracie tries to buck Davis off but Davis is having none of it.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Davis stands up.
Gracie shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Davis sprawls well. Davis wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gracie gets slowly back to his feet.

Davis scores with a one two! Gracie had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.


It looks like Vitor Gracie has been cut.

Gracie shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Davis napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Gracie working the ground and pound but Davis is defending the strikes.
Gracie is looking to take a break and control but Davis is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Davis tries to escape but Gracie is in control.
Gracie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Davis keeps working.

Gracie is trying to ground and pound but Davis uses the momentary lack of control by Gracie to regain half guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Nice takedown defense from Davis. No joy for Gracie on that attempt.
Davis attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Davis misses with a body shot.
Davis works the jab nicely.
Vitor Gracie is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Davis throws a hook but Gracie blocks it.
Gracie avoids the body shot from Davis.
Davis tries to bum rush Gracie with a series of wild strikes but Gracie uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Davis throws the kick towards the body but Gracie avoids it.
Davis lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Gracie circles away quickly and effectively.
Gracie gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Davis cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Davis thows a body shot but no joy.

Davis throws a good cross that connects.
Davis lands with an uppercut that bounces Gracie off the cage and back into range.
Davis takes a swing at Gracie's ribcage but misses.
Davis throws an overhand right that lands on Gracie's shoulder, as Gracie tries to avoid the shot.
We've been told by Gracie's head coaches at >TAPOUT ELITE< that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Gracie tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Davis manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Gracie decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Davis manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Gracie keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Davis misses with a body shot.
Davis throws a shot from downtown. Gracie moves away and avoids it.

Gracie scores with a takedown into Davis's guard.
Gracie engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Davis wants to stand but Gracie is controlling the position.
Gracie postures up in Davis's guard and throws a big left but Davis blocks it.

Davis wants to get back to his feet but Gracie is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Gracie passes Davis's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Gracie is looking to take a break and control but Davis is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Davis throws a hook but Gracie avoids it easily.
Davis just misses with a punch to the body.
Gracie shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Davis pinned against the cage. Davis gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Gracie avoids the head kick by Davis.
Antonio Davis seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Davis thows a body shot but no joy.

Gracie shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Gracie was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Davis is trying to buck Gracie off.
Gracie has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Gracie tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gracie has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Davis avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Gracie.
Gracie landing strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gracie postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Gracie tries for a kimura but Davis is defending well.
Gracie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Davis keeps working.
Gracie prevents Davis from escaping the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Davis is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Gracie tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Davis pushes Gracie away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Gracie gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Gracie in side control, throwing shots but Davis defends.
Gracie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Davis keeps working.

Gracie prevents Davis from escaping the position.
Gracie misses with the ground and pound.

Antonio Davis is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Gracie misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Gracie thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Davis tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops.

Gracie has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Davis has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!

And that's the end of the fight!
Vitor Gracie showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Davis has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
