The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hillis instigates a clinch.
Hillis lands a nice elbow from the clinch.

It looks like Damien Melendez has been cut.

Hillis breaks the clinch.
Hillis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Melendez paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Hillis rushes Melendez and presses him up against the cage.

Melendez jumps guard and drags Hillis to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Melendez isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Hillis stacks Melendez on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Hillis!

Hillis stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Melendez shoots in but Hillis avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Melendez stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Hillis.

Melendez decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Melendez is looking for submissions but instead, Hillis has regained full guard.
Melendez won't allow Hillis to get back to his feet.

Melendez drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hillis manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Melendez has Hillis in his guard.

Hillis gets to his feet - Melendez follows without any prompting.
Melendez shoots for a takedown but Hillis saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Hillis is looking to clinch but Melendez is avoiding it.
Peyton Hillis seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Melendez tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Hillis tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Melendez's elbow.
Hillis struggles to land a body shot inside as Melendez controls his hands.

Hillis tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Melendez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Melendez avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hillis tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Melendez paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Hillis lands a left hand that snaps the head of Melendez backwards.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Hillis stands up from Melendez's guard - Hillis perhaps looking for a knockout.

Melendez throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Hillis tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Melendez is in Hillis's guard.
Hillis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Melendez wants to stand but Hillis is controlling his posture from full guard.

Melendez postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Hillis is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Melendez, into his guard.
Hillis knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Melendez on the ground.

Damien Melendez's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters.

Melendez is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Hillis is defending well.
