PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Joe Schilling (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sanji Sanpun (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Schilling kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Roy Jones - Can't be touched. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Joe Schilling!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sanji Sanpun!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Chris Saunders and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sanpun shoots in for a takedown but Schilling shows good takedown defense.
Sanpun ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Schilling slips under a jab from Sanpun.
A nice combination there by Sanpun.
Sanpun misses with an uppercut. Schilling saw that one coming.
Sanpun throws a right and a left that both miss.
Sanji Sanpun seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sanpun throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Schilling's waist but Schilling gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sanpun off to one side.
Schilling misses with an uppercut.
Sanpun throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

so Schilling counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Schilling trying to control the position from guard on top but Sanpun is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Schilling thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Sanpun is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Schilling is controlling him.
Schilling pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sanpun is keeping the position for now.

Schilling drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Schilling jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Schilling passes Sanpun's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Sanpun wants to improve his position but Schilling is controlling well.
Sanpun is trying to stand.

Schilling looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Sanpun is looking to escape.
Schilling looks to score some points with some ground and pound.

Schilling is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Sanpun has managed to free his arm - good work.
Schilling seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Schilling throwing shots but Sanpun is blocking nicely.
Schilling is looking to stall here but Sanpun recovers full guard.
Sanpun is pulling down on Schilling's head to control his posture.
Schilling is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Schilling prevents Sanpun from getting back to his feet.
Schilling loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Sanpun wants to sweep but no luck.
Sanpun keeping moving, preventing Schilling from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Sanpun slips under a jab.
Sanpun doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Schilling throws a poor cross that misses
and Sanpun counters with a stiff right hand.
Schilling throws a leg kick but Sanpun sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Schilling fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Schilling throws a head kick that misses.
Schilling on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Sanpun connects with a crisp jab.
Sanpun throws a big shot that misses.

A jab from Sanpun does it's job there.
Horrible takedown by Sanpun or perhaps it was just good defense by Schilling which made him look bad.
Joe Schilling has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sanji Sanpun.
Sanpun throws a lazy uppercut
and Sanpun takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Schilling throws a hook to the side of Sanpun's head but Sanpun sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Schilling shoots in but no luck this time.
Sanpun fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Schilling manages to avoid it.

Schilling gets a double leg takedown into Sanpun's guard.
Sanpun is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Schilling is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Sanpun's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Sanpun's back!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Will Schilling go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Sanpun is trying to get back to his feet but Schilling has full control of the position and if anything, Sanpun has just worked his way into a worse spot.
Schilling misses with punches from the back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


No luck with that takedown attempt from Schilling.
Schilling throws a solid leg kick but Sanpun takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Schilling.
Sanpun just misses with a punch to the body.
Sanpun misses with a double jab.
Schilling bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Sanpun shoots for a double leg takedown but Schilling sprawls well. He's pushed Sanpun's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Sanpun lands the left hand.
Schilling shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Sanpun eats them both and turns towards Schilling to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
A slow jab from Sanpun misses its intended target.
Schilling scores with a sloppy right hand. Sanpun should have avoided that one.
Schilling looks for a takedown but Sanpun sprawls well.
Sanpun might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.
Schilling takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.

Sanpun rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Schilling counters with a nice body shot.
Schilling misses with a looping right.
Schilling works over Sanpun's head and body with a nice combination.
A big left from Sanpun misses.
Schilling dives in and grabs Sanpun's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sanpun pushes down on Schilling's head and hops out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Joe Schilling. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sanpun decides to stand up, so the ref orders Schilling to his feet.

Schilling on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Sanpun uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Schilling.
Schilling moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Sanpun has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Schilling seems to be looking for submissions.
Schilling throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Sanpun looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Sanpun throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Schilling is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.

and Sanpun counters with a straight right hand.

Schilling shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Schilling showed some decent athleticism there.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sanpun is staying active underneath Schilling, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Schilling is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Sanpun is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

That was a close second round but I would say that Joe Schilling will probably get the nod.

Sanpun is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Schilling is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
