The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Silva shoots for a double leg takedown but Springer sprawls well. He's pushed Silva's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Silva on the wrong end of a kick to the body.
Silva shoots in for a takedown but Springer shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Springer fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Springer tries to land a front kick but Silva steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Springer misses with a jab, cross combination.

Silva takes a jab right on the kisser.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Springer scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
Geoff Springer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Silva fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Salomao Silva. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Silva is breathing heavily.
Springer throws a 1-2 combo that connects squarely on Silva's jaw, knocking him onto his back! Springer dives in looking to finish as Silva flails his arms in a desperate attempt to block Springer's strikes! Springer is raining down hammerfists and the ref stops it! Silva's desperate flailing just didn't constitute intelligent defence. Some people will probably question the ref's decision but Silva was definitely hurt and the ref saved him from taking unnecessary punishment. A fighter's safety is paramount in this sport.
