PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bj Cole (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddy McFilthy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Freddy McFilthy will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bj Cole!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Freddy McFilthy!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cole closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into McFilthy's guard.
Cole might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
McFilthy is trying to keep Cole in close.
Cole trying to stand up but can't free himself from McFilthy's guard.
Cole has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Cole trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Cole trying to control the position from guard on top but McFilthy is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McFilthy manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Cole manages to get himself to full guard.
McFilthy trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
McFilthy in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Cole uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Cole tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Cole closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. McFilthy quickly recovers to half guard.
McFilthy wants to get back to full guard.
McFilthy is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
McFilthy is trying to maintain the position but Cole is very close to passing his half guard.
McFilthy wants to sweep but Cole has passed to side control!
McFilthy is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cole throwing shots but missing, from side control.
McFilthy tries to buck Cole off but Cole is having none of it.
McFilthy is not content to let Cole control the position.
McFilthy is looking for a sweep.
McFilthy seems a little lost for a moment, as Cole dominates the positioning.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Cole decides to stand up, so the ref orders McFilthy to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

McFilthy decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
McFilthy wants to advance to full mount but Cole doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

Cole has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes McFilthy off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Cole swats away the attempt to clinch by McFilthy.
McFilthy fails with an attempt to clinch.
McFilthy is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Cole shoots for a double leg takedown but McFilthy sprawls well. He's pushed Cole's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
McFilthy wants to clinch

and Cole counters by moving into the clinch.
McFilthy jumps guard but Cole stands there with McFilthy around his waist. McFilthy gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
McFilthy is trying to pull guard but Cole turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Cole manages to break the clinch.

McFilthy looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Cole!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

McFilthy goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Cole has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for McFilthy but great work by Cole.
McFilthy can't do much from the bottom here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Cole advances nicely into full mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Bj Cole will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


McFilthy blocks a head kick by Cole.
McFilthy misses with a takedown

and Cole moves into the clinch.
McFilthy drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
McFilthy wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Cole turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Cole manages to end up in side control.
Cole controls the position.

Cole decides to take the fight back to the feet.
McFilthy looks for a takedown but Cole sprawls well.
Bj Cole has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Freddy McFilthy.

That's one minute gone in the round.

McFilthy shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than McFilthy was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Cole prevents McFilthy from improving position.
Cole is not content to let McFilthy control the position.
Cole regains half guard there - taking advantage of McFilthy's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
McFilthy wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cole keeps working.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cole wants to get back to his feet.
Cole is staying active underneath McFilthy, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Freddy McFilthy wasn't active enough on the ground.

and Cole counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Cole.
This has been an exciting period of action!
McFilthy keeping moving, preventing Cole from controlling successfully.
McFilthy looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cole is one step ahead there.

McFilthy working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cole doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but McFilthy is tightening it up a little... Cole has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Cole reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Cole taps out! Nice BJJ there by McFilthy!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Freddy McFilthy!
