PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Stephen Hawking (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nathan Danes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Stephen Hawking!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Nathan Danes!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Danes drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Hawking is working an open guard so Danes takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Danes clinches.

Danes gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Hawking is in trouble now - Danes has advanced to mount!
Danes sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Danes raining down shots from the mount!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Danes thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Danes stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.

Hawking fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Danes clinches with his opponent.

Danes's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Danes avoids a punch combination nicely.
Hawking shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Danes sprawls well. Danes wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Hawking gets slowly back to his feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hawking is defended easily by Danes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Stephen Hawking. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Danes moves into the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.

Danes breaks from the clinch.
Hawking closes this distance looking for a takedown but Danes circles away.
Danes connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Hawking misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Danes closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Hawking to the mat! Hawking manages to get full guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Danes gets to his feet. Hawking looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Hawking tries to keep at a distance but Danes has taken the fight into the clinch.

Danes is trying to trip Hawking. He has hold of a leg but Hawking is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Danes persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Hawking avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Hawking knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Danes on the ground.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hawking utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Danes slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Danes controls the position.
Danes has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
It looks like Danes might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Hawking taking punishment in the form of punches.
Hawking seems a little lost for a moment, as Danes dominates the positioning.
Hawking tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Danes presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Danes landing strikes from the mount and Hawking is in trouble!

Danes pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Danes jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Hawking manages to avoid the submission attempt.

Danes is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Hawking is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Danes decides to stand back up.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Hawking doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Danes decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hawking's guard.
Danes throwing strikes but missing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nathan Danes dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Hawking shoots in for a takedown but Danes shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Danes has closed the distance and engaged Hawking in a clinch.

Danes gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Danes keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Danes postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Hawking to stand up.

Danes shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hawking napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Nathan Danes has got the better of the ground game so far.

Danes tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Danes moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Danes has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Hawking!
Danes lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Hawking hang on?

Danes wants to finish this one by submission but Hawking is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Danes.

Danes is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Hawking is surviving well by controlling Danes's body position as best he can.

Danes avoids the attempt from Hawking to control.
Danes lands with some strikes.
Danes controlling his opponent.
Danes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Danes looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Danes throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Danes scoring with strikes but Hawking is staying in there.

Hawking is trying desperately to improve position.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hawking tries to control Danes's body but Danes pushes him off. Hawking squirms to his side and now Danes has his back!

Nathan Danes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!


A swing and a miss from Danes.
Hawking tries to close the distance and clinch but Danes swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Hawking shoots in for a takedown but Danes shows good takedown defense.

Hawking tries to sprawl but Danes drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Danes is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Let's hope that Danes has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Danes looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Hawking trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!

Danes in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Danes takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Danes lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Danes is landing with some decent strikes but Hawking is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Danes jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Hawking manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Hawking looking for a sweep but Danes has passed into full mount! Oh no!

Danes lands a heavy elbow.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Danes is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Hawking to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Hawking shrugs it off.

Danes is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Hawking is surviving well by controlling Danes's body position as best he can.

Hawking is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.

Danes with shots to the head and body - Hawking looks very uncomfortable down there.
Danes avoids the attempt from Hawking to control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Nathan Danes comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Danes has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
