Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Manuel Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paulo Souza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paulo Souza is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Manuel Rodriguez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paulo Souza!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Souza tries a head kick but it misses.

Rodriguez clinches up against the cage.
Souza is trying to drag Rodriguez to the mat but Rodriguez just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Rodriguez tightens his grip and picks Souza up, before dumping him to the ground. Souza manages to land in guard.
Rodriguez prevents Souza from getting back to his feet.
Souza is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Rodriguez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

We're going to have a standup here because Manuel Rodriguez wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
No joy there for Rodriguez, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Souza tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Rodriguez swivels and escapes.
Rodriguez thows a body shot but no joy.

Rodriguez gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Rodriguez breaks from the clinch.
Souza shoots for a double leg takedown but Rodriguez sprawls well. He's pushed Souza's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Manuel Rodriguez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paulo Souza.
Souza pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Souza swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Rodriguez counters by clinching up.
Souza looks winded!
Souza is trying to break the clinch but Rodriguez has him pressed against the cage.
Souza is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Rodriguez is defending well.

Rodriguez breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Rodriguez shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Souza is looking to escape.

Rodriguez decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Souza.
Rodriguez cracks Souza with a good jab.

Rodriguez gets a clinch.
Rodriguez prevents a takedown attempt there.
Souza goes for a takedown attempt but Rodriguez pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Rodriguez throws a head kick that misses.

Rodriguez drives through with a takedown into Souza's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Rodriguez gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Rodriguez rushes Souza and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Rodriguez lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Rodriguez is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Rodriguez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Rodriguez is pushing Souza up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Rodriguez is defending well against a takedown attempt.

Rodriguez turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Rodriguez manages to end up in side control.
Souza seems a little lost for a moment, as Rodriguez dominates the positioning.
Rodriguez's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Rodriguez has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Souza pushes Rodriguez away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Rodriguez gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Rodriguez displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Souza.
Souza dodges the punch combination from Rodriguez.
Manuel Rodriguez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Rodriguez drives through with a takedown into guard.
Souza wants to stand up but Rodriguez is controlling him.
Rodriguez is stalling in the full guard.
Rodriguez trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Souza manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!
Rodriguez pulls Souza in close to his closed guard and prevents Souza from doing any damage or advancing position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Souza has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Rodriguez is proving hard to escape from.

Rodriguez has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Souza off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Souza throws a sloppy head kick and Rodriguez moves out of range easily.

Rodriguez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Souza is breathing heavily.
Rodriguez works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Rodriguez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Rodriguez here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Rodriguez postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Souza to stand up.

Rodriguez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Rodriguez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Rodriguez gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!

Rodriguez fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Souza, pushing him back against the cage.

Rodriguez has his foot on Souza's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Souza works his way back into a safe position though.
Souza has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Rodriguez is proving hard to escape from.

Rodriguez has a closed guard, preventing Souza from standing up.

Rodriguez uses the cage to get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Souza tries for a takedown but Rodriguez sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Manuel Rodriguez dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Souza throws a head kick but Rodriguez moves out of range.
Souza shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Rodriguez but Rodriguez pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Rodriguez closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Souza is pushing Rodriguez's head away, looking to escape. Rodriguez manages to hold on to the position though.

Rodriguez passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Souza!

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Well Rodriguez has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Manuel Rodriguez opened up his post fight interview with a scream to camera that he wants a title shot! Whether he deserves the shot will be up to the management of the organization, so I guess he'll have to wait and see.
