The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendes fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Mendes tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gardner sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Mendes somewhat.
Gardner stuffs the takedown attempt from Mendes. Mendes gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jesus Mendes. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mendes fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Gardner swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Mendes shoots in looking for a takedown but Gardner manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Mendes's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gardner sizes up Mendes with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Mendes shoots for a takedown but Gardner saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Gardner is looking to clinch.
The fighters circling - Gardner throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Mendes avoids the head kick by Gardner.
A head kick misses from Mendes.
Gardner throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mendes closes the distance and clinches up with Gardner, looking for a takedown. Mendes pushes Gardner against the ropes but Gardner circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Mendes shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gardner as he jumps to the side.

Mendes is rocked!

Gardner rushes Mendes and presses him up against the ropes.
Oh Mendes is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Mendes tries for a takedown but Gardner manages to get underhooks.
Mendes seems to have got his legs back now.

Mendes gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Gardner controls Mendes momentarily but Mendes frees himself.

Gardner manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mendes manages to get himself to full guard.

Mendes is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Gardner has his hands clasped together but Mendes extends an breaks Gardner's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Mendes.
