PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mike Alverez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steven de Pina (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alverez comes to the cage accompanied by ALL DAY. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 13 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mike Alverez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Steven de Pina!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Aafke Stam and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A decent looking cross lands there for de Pina.
de Pina misses with a looping left.
de Pina throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
de Pina misses with a shot to the body
and Alverez counters with a lovely shot to the body.
de Pina scores with a hook to the body. Alverez takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
de Pina scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one.
de Pina misses with a hook. Alverez ducked under it nicely.
Alverez scores with a jab. de Pina acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
de Pina takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
de Pina misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Alverez.
Alverez throws a push kick but de Pina slaps the foot to one side.
de Pina misses the jab.
de Pina misses with the combination.
Alverez scores with a hook to the body. de Pina takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Alverez looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Alverez fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but de Pina avoids it really well and circles away.
de Pina connects with a good right hand that stumbles Alverez. Alverez circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
de Pina misses with a hook to the body
and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

That's one minute gone in the round.
de Pina throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
de Pina fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Alverez manages to avoid it.
de Pina throws a body punch but Alverez moves out of range.
Alverez throws a push kick but de Pina slaps the foot to one side.
A jab from Alverez misses.
de Pina thows a body shot but no joy.
de Pina throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Alverez counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Alverez fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
de Pina is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Alverez rather than just go for the knockout.
de Pina swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Alverez.
de Pina takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
de Pina looks to score with a jab to the body but Alverez is just out of range.
Alverez fakes the leg kick and cracks de Pina in the body.
Alverez takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
de Pina swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
de Pina looks to land a left hand but Alverez moved out of range nicely.

Alverez closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. de Pina did well to prevent Alverez getting side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Alverez is nestled in close to de Pina, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
de Pina keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Alverez thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Alverez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but de Pina does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
de Pina really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Alverez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Alverez is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and de Pina defends it well.

Alverez is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Alverez is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so de Pina is just riding it out for now. Alverez eventually gives up the hold.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Alverez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed de Pina's head.
Alverez is nestled in close to de Pina, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Alverez lands a nice short elbow.
Alverez thows a huge punch but de Pina dodges it nicely.

Alverez not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Alverez seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Alverez looking for a submission but de Pina manages to get full guard, putting an end to that submission attempt.
Alverez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Alverez dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


A combination from de Pina does no damage.
Alverez misses with a series of wild punches.
A slow jab from de Pina misses its intended target.
Alverez scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
de Pina tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
de Pina lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by de Pina.
de Pina loads up on a big right hand but Alverez slips the punch.
Alverez throws a sloppy head kick and de Pina moves out of range easily.
de Pina moves out of range of the body kick.
de Pina looks to land a combination. Alverez sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
de Pina getting the better of the striking in that exchange.


Alverez is rocked!
de Pina lands with a right and another and another! Alverez is in big trouble! de Pina lands again and this time it's lights out for Alverez! A quality knockout there for de Pina.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:43 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Steven de Pina!
Steven de Pina spent the whole post fight interview bigging himself up. It didn't go down that well with the fans after a while as they thought it was a bit arrogant.
