Alves comes into the arena with Trik Turner - Friends and Family blaring out of the sound system. Freddy Alves has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Freddy Alves!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 28 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Seu Braga and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson throws a big shot that misses.
Alves misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Alves ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Johnson moves away.

Freddy Alves seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Alves throws a right and a left that both miss.
Alves scores with a jab to the body.
Johnson tries to clinch but Alves moves out of range.
Alves's corner calls for a 1-2. Alves obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Johnson walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
No joy there for Alves, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Some wild striking there from Alves.
Johnson throws a head kick that misses.

No luck for Alves with that takedown attempt.
Alves throws a lazy right hand but Johnson sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Alves takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.

John Johnson is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Alves tries to bum rush Johnson with a series of wild strikes but Johnson uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Johnson tries to clinch but Alves is having none of it.
Alves connects with a right hand. Johnson shakes it off.

Johnson darts in and clinches Alves up against the cage.

Johnson scores a nice knee to the body.

Johnson lands with a light punch inside.
The referee is keeping an eye on Alves - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Johnson makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Johnson lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Alves on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Alves throws a head punch that misses.
Alves has a couple of punches blocked by Johnson.
Alves blocks an elbow strike from Johnson.
Johnson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Johnson creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Johnson lands a nice elbow.
A head punch on the inside from Alves fails to land.
Alves swings wildly with an uppercut but Johnson uses good head movement to avoid it.
Alves is trying to stall.

With the two fighters working up against the cage, Johnson just misses with a elbow thrown towards Alves's brow.
Alves blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Johnson connects with a knee to the head.
Johnson throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Alves has a couple of punches blocked by Johnson.

Alves blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.

Alves dodges an elbow strike from Johnson.

Johnson tries to land knees in the clinch but Alves avoids the damage to the body.

Alves is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Freddy Alves. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Alves tries to score a body lock takedown but Johnson shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Alves pushes Johnson back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Johnson lands a nice elbow from the clinch.
Johnson is struggling to control the position.
Johnson is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Freddy Alves will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Johnson swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Alves.
Alves misses with a two punch combination.
Johnson slips under a jab.
Alves throws a right hand that Johnson ducks under and follows up with a left that Johnson also avoids with ease.
Alves circles away from the clinch attempt.
Alves throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Johnson.
Johnson moves in looking to clinch but Alves pushes him off.
Alves takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Johnson slips a jab and a cross from Alves.
Freddy Alves is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Johnson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Johnson ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Johnson misses with a head kick.
Alves misses with a double jab.
Alves misses with a wild combination.
Alves connects with a crisp jab.
Alves does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Johnson lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Johnson throws a head kick but Alves moves out of range.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Alves throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Alves misses with a jab, cross combination.
Johnson moves in looking to clinch but Alves pushes him off.
Johnson tries to clinch up.

Alves dives in and scores a takedown into Johnson's guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Johnson holds on and takes a little breather.
Alves missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Johnson seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Alves looking to sit in guard and control but Johnson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Johnson passes Alves's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Alves wants to control but Johnson is keeping busy.
Johnson trying to mount his opponent but Alves defends it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Alves manages to get to full guard.
Johnson sitting in guard here, content to control.
Johnson missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Alves looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Alves working a defensive guard but Johnson manages to pass into side control anyway.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but John Johnson will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Good leg kick by Johnson there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Johnson tries to clinch but Alves moves out of range.

Freddy Alves is winning the standup battle so far.
Alves lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Johnson circles away quickly and effectively.
Johnson tries to clinch up but Alves circles away and keeps his distance.
No joy there for Alves, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Alves throws a series of punches but Johnson moves out of range.
Alves is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Johnson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Alves paws at him with a jab and circles away.
A jab from Alves misses.
Johnson takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Alves misses with a looping left.
Alves bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Johnson's head.


Johnson is rocked!
Alves pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Johnson is still on wobbly legs! Can Alves finish him?
Johnson tries to clinch up.
A big right followed by a crushing left from Alves knocks Johnson out cold! Ouch - that one's going to be featured in highlight reels for years to come!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:25 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Freddy Alves!
After winning the bout, Freddy Alves thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
