PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Papp Robert (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nuno Miguel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Papp Robert!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Nuno Miguel!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Ryoma Takatsuka and Paul Gruel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for Robert with that takedown attempt.
Robert shoots and misses

and Miguel counters with a single leg into guard. Robert didn't expect that.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Robert tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Robert had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Miguel defends it easily.
Robert is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Miguel gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

and Miguel counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Miguel passes Robert's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Miguel stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Miguel shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Robert as he avoids it easily.
Robert moves in looking to clinch but Miguel pushes him off.
Robert changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Miguel tries to avoid it but Robert manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Miguel to the ground. Miguel escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Robert is breathing heavily.

Miguel changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Robert looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Miguel stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Robert shoots in for a takedown but Miguel shows good takedown defense.

Miguel works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
Miguel connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Robert some visible discomfort.

Miguel decides to stand back up.
Robert blocks the body kick.

Miguel darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Robert has hold of Miguel's hands but Miguel slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Miguel takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Miguel prevents Robert from improving his position.
Miguel drops an elbow to the side of Robert's head.

Robert actively working from the bottom here.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Miguel is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
It looks like Miguel might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miguel moves into the clinch.
Robert wants to break free but Miguel has control.
Robert fails to pull the fight into his guard.
A frustrated look appears on Miguel's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Robert throws a head punch that misses.
Robert jumps guard but Miguel turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Miguel tries a body shot but Robert blocks it.
Miguel is trying to push Robert away but Robert has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Miguel gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Robert regains guard.
Robert controls Miguel momentarily but Miguel frees himself.

Miguel stands and steps away. Robert gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Miguel manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Robert on his heels. He'll look to pass Robert's guard now, I'm sure.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Miguel passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Miguel is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Robert knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Miguel cracks Robert with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Robert wants to control but Miguel postures up.

Miguel working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Miguel has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Robert sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Miguel not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Miguel has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Robert has hold of Miguel's hands but Miguel slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Miguel uses his free foot to push down on Robert's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Robert.
Miguel is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Robert can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Robert is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Robert is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.

Robert is trying desperately to improve position.

Miguel has hold of Robert's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Robert manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Nuno Miguel has got the better of the ground game so far.
Miguel has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Robert's face.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Nuno Miguel showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Robert wants to clinch up but Miguel keeps it at a distance.

Robert darts in and clinches Miguel up against the cage.

Robert jumps guard but Miguel stands there with Robert around his waist. Robert gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Robert has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Miguel avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Miguel stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Miguel wants it to stay on the feet.

Robert is looking for a triangle but Miguel pushes his legs off easily.

Miguel avoids the attempt from Robert to control.

Robert looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!

Miguel has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.
Miguel slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Papp Robert has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Nuno Miguel is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Well Miguel has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
