PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tommy Pitera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joseph Sterling (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tommy Pitera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Joseph Sterling!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Alyssa Summers and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pitera moves out of range as Sterling strikes.
Pitera tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Pitera misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Sterling fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Pitera dodges the punch combination from Sterling.
Sterling checks a leg kick.
Sterling's corner calls for a 1-2. Sterling obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Sterling dips to his left and cracks Pitera with an uppercut!

Sterling closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Pitera is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sterling's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Sterling passes into side control, despite Pitera's attempt to control the position.
The referee asks Sterling politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Sterling prefers to stall for the moment though.
Let's hope that Sterling has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Pitera manages to work his way to half guard, despite Sterling's best efforts.

Pitera wants to control but Sterling is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Sterling is pressing down on Pitera's thigh, looking to free his foot. Pitera is holding on for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Sterling in particular looking to stall.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Joseph Sterling.
Sterling tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pitera sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Sterling somewhat.

Pitera avoids a lazy jab quite easily.

Sterling throws a hook to the side of Pitera's head but Pitera sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Sterling shoots for a double leg takedown but Pitera sprawls well. He's pushed Sterling's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Tommy Pitera has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Joseph Sterling.

and Pitera makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

Pitera uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Sterling.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Sterling feints a jab promting Pitera to slip. Sterling then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Pitera slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Sterling might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

Pitera bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Sterling throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Pitera stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Pitera takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

and Pitera counters with a good low kick that Sterling was not able to check.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

Sterling connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Pitera momentarily.

Sterling feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Well Sterling has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Joseph Sterling decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
