PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bill Russell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Steel is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Survivor - Burning Heart. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Bill Russell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Steel!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Reed Andrews and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steel throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Steel lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Russell at a distance.
Russell closes the distance and clinches up with Steel, looking for a takedown. Russell pushes Steel against the cage but Steel circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Steel cracks Russell with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Steel falls off balance throwing a combination

and Russell counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Russell scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Russell wants to work for an arm triangle but Steel is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Russell thows a huge punch but Steel dodges it nicely.

Steel is looking to escape.
Russell trying to mount his opponent but Steel defends it.
Steel keeping hold of Russell's head, controlling as best he can.
Russell moves nicely into side control.
Steel gets back to half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Steel manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Steel controls Russell momentarily but Russell frees himself.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Russell accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Steel wants to stand and escape but Russell is having none of it.
Steel utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Russell slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Steel is looking for a sweep.
Russell in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Steel is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
Russell has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Steel!

Steel is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Russell cracks Steel with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Russell throwing strikes but Steel recovers to half guard. A much better position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Russell thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Steel's head.
Steel manages to get to full guard.
Russell throws a big right hand that misses.

Steel is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Russell is controlling him.
Steel tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Russell trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Russell works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Steel tries to roll over but Russell keeps him under control.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Steel sizes up Russell with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Steel lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
John Steel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Russell walks into a stiff left hand from Steel.
Steel ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Steel misses with a jab, cross combination.
Russell has his takedown stuffed
and Steel counters with a two punch combo.

Steel throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Russell.
Steel fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Russell tries to move into range but Steel moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Steel misses with the combination.

Steel lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Steel stuns Russell with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Steel moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
John Steel is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Steel misses with a wild combination.
Steel throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Steel lands with a right hand.
Steel misses with a series of wild punches.
Steel lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Russell backs up against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Russell throws a wild hook but Steel just manages to duck under it and - ooooh! Russell gets nailed by a brutal uppercut which crumples him back against the cage! The referee jumps in - Steel raises his hands in celebration and walks away!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:14 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Steel!
