PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mark Dempsey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lex Vanhorn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vanhorn has chosen Coming Undone as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mark Dempsey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lex Vanhorn!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Bruno Hogan and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vanhorn shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Dempsey but Dempsey pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Lex Vanhorn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Vanhorn moves into the clinch.
Vanhorn has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Dempsey is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Vanhorn tries for a takedown but Dempsey manages to get underhooks.
Mark Dempsey has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Lex Vanhorn.
Dempsey is looking to take this one to the mat.
Vanhorn has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Dempsey after a bit of a struggle.
Dempsey tries to throw a body punch but Vanhorn avoids it by throwing Dempsey back against the cage.

Vanhorn gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Dempsey looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Vanhorn tries to free his leg and advance position but Dempsey is retaining full guard.
Dempsey can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Vanhorn controls the pace.
Vanhorn trying to control but Dempsey is working from the bottom.
Dempsey on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Dempsey tries to get out of the position.

Vanhorn is pushing down on Dempsey's leg trying to pass to half guard. Dempsey is fighting to maintain full guard but Vanhorn has managed to sneak the leg through.
Vanhorn slows the pace down in half guard.

Vanhorn is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Dempsey has managed to free his arm - good work.
Vanhorn thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Dempsey's head.
Vanhorn thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Vanhorn wants to control but Dempsey is keeping him busy.
Vanhorn works his way into full mount!

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Vanhorn has control of Dempsey's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Dempsey regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Vanhorn unloads with some shots from mount but Dempsey bucks and avoids them well.
Dempsey is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Vanhorn moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Dempsey has worked his arm free - good work by Dempsey!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Vanhorn content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Dempsey dodges the ground and pound from Vanhorn.
Vanhorn has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Vanhorn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Dempsey knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Dempsey is not content to let Vanhorn control the position.
Dempsey prevents Vanhorn from moving into mount.
Vanhorn working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
Dempsey takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Vanhorn controlling the position from side mount.
Dempsey knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Vanhorn on the ground.

Dempsey struggling a bit here.
Vanhorn trying to control the position but Dempsey is working away.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vanhorn goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Dempsey rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Vanhorn's guard! Nice work there by Dempsey!
Dempsey throws an elbow that misses. Vanhorn uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Dempsey's guard. Nice move by Vanhorn!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Vanhorn working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lex Vanhorn dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Vanhorn clinches.
Vanhorn fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Vanhorn is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Dempsey pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Vanhorn is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Dempsey is defending well.

Vanhorn tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Dempsey just stands there and leans against the cage.
Dempsey is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Vanhorn tries to score a body lock takedown but Dempsey shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Vanhorn jumps guard and drags Dempsey to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Dempsey throws a big elbow that misses.

Dempsey trying to control the position from guard on top but Vanhorn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Dempsey is posturing up here but Vanhorn has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Dempsey tries to roll out but it's too tight and Dempsey has to tap! Slick submission there by Vanhorn!
