PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sam Micklen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jordan Stump (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Stump is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Drop the Bombshell. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sam Micklen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jordan Stump!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Hugh Johnson and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Micklen doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Stump counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Micklen!
Micklen manages to regain half guard. Good work.

Micklen kicks off Stump and gets to his feet.
Micklen swings for the body but Stump moves out of range.
Micklen swinging wildly here.
Micklen throws a head kick but Stump moves out of range.
Micklen closes this distance looking for a takedown but Stump circles away.
Stump moves in looking to clinch but Micklen pushes him off.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sam Micklen. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The referee asks Stump politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Stump prefers to stall for the moment though.

Micklen is looking to regain half guard here but Stump keeps moving and retains side control.
Micklen wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.
Micklen gets back to half guard.
Stump perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Micklen could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Micklen won't allow Stump to pass to mount.
Stump takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jordan Stump.

Stump pulls Micklen into guard.
Stump keeping moving, preventing Micklen from controlling successfully.
Stump seems keen to control Micklen's posture.
Stump manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Micklen is working to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Stump is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Micklen has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Stump really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Micklen. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

It looks like Stump might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Micklen is trying to reverse the position but instead Stump has taken his back - oops!

Stump is persistently looking for the submission but Micklen is defending it well.
Micklen tries to escape but Stump has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
Micklen breaks Stump's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Stump looking to hit a scissor sweep but Micklen is one step ahead there.
Stump seems keen to control Micklen's posture.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Stump avoids the head kick by Micklen.
Stump fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Micklen manages to avoid it.

Micklen fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Stump, pushing him back against the cage.

Micklen tries to throw a body punch but Stump avoids it by throwing Micklen back against the cage.

Micklen controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Stump is on top in guard.
Stump must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Micklen is trying to keep Stump in close.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Sam Micklen just wasn't active enough.

Stump fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Micklen, pushing him back against the cage.

Stump is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Micklen can't fight it off and eventually Stump manages to take the fight to the floor. Micklen looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Micklen wants to get back to his feet but Stump is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Micklen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Stump gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Stump with a flurry of punches that miss.
Stump trying to control the position from guard on top but Micklen is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Micklen manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Micklen trying to control but Stump is having none of it.
Micklen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Stump is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Stump is desperately trying to improve his position but Micklen has a good base and remains in mount.
Micklen pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

Micklen avoids the attempt from Stump to control.
Stump is looking to improve his position but Micklen isn't that keen on the idea.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Stump can do anything to dispel that myth.

That was a close second round but I would say that Sam Micklen will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Micklen enables Stump to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Micklen manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Micklen gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Stump to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Micklen wants to sweep but no luck.
Stump takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Micklen has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Stump can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Micklen tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Stump swivels and escapes.

Micklen might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Micklen has a hand on Stump's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Stump takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Jordan Stump comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Stump has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
