PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fedor Sakuraba (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Toten Kopf (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kopf has chosen Motörhead - Iron Fist as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fedor Sakuraba!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Toten Kopf!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Konstantin Menshow and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kopf throws a leg kick which misses Sakuraba's front leg but catches the back leg as Sakuraba tries to avoid it.
Kopf tries to clinch but Sakuraba is having none of it.

Sakuraba gets a takedown into half guard.
Kopf wants to control but Sakuraba is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Sakuraba wants to stand up but Kopf has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Kopf is trying to stand back up but Sakuraba is controlling him
Kopf is staying active underneath Sakuraba, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Sakuraba is really struggling to control Kopf but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sakuraba moves nicely into side control.

Sakuraba tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sakuraba tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Sakuraba has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Kopf tries to escape but Sakuraba is in control.
Kopf sneaks back into half guard.
Kopf is trying is best to control the position here.

Kopf is controlling Sakuraba's posture.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Sakuraba postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Kopf is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Sakuraba, into his guard.
Sakuraba is breathing heavily.
Kopf stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sakuraba swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Sakuraba wants to sweep but no luck.

Sakuraba has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kopf can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Sakuraba is working an open guard so Kopf takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Sakuraba shoots in for a takedown but Kopf shows good takedown defense.
Sakuraba slips a jab and a cross from Kopf.
Kopf tries a head kick but it misses.
Kopf misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sakuraba loads up on a big right hand but Kopf slips the punch.
Sakuraba blocks a head kick by Kopf.
Sakuraba closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kopf circles away.
Sakuraba shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fedor Sakuraba. That's going to take a lot out of him.
No joy there for Kopf, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Sakuraba keeps the fight on the outside.

Sakuraba decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Sakuraba is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Sakuraba wants to pass the guard but Kopf is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Toten Kopf will probably get the nod.

and Kopf counters with a good, hard body kick but Sakuraba shrugs it off.
Toten Kopf seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sakuraba avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Kopf misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
The fight stays on the outside here - Kopf looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Sakuraba is looking for a kimura but Kopf is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sakuraba to get the leverage.

Kopf kicks Sakuraba off and gets back to his feet.
Kopf misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Sakuraba gets a clinch.
Kopf with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Kopf tries a knee to the head but Sakuraba blocks it.
Kopf wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Sakuraba turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!

Sakuraba decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Kopf misses with a head kick.
Kopf throws a head kick but Sakuraba moves out of range.
Kopf fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Sakuraba is out of range.

Sakuraba closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Sakuraba wants to control but Kopf is keeping him busy.
Kopf is trying to control Sakuraba's posture but Sakuraba avoids it.

Sakuraba thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Kopf manages to get back to half guard.
Kopf keeping hold of Sakuraba's head, controlling as best he can.
Let's hope that Kopf has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Kopf wants to stand and escape but Sakuraba is having none of it.

Sakuraba stops Kopf from standing up.

Kopf working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sakuraba doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sakuraba manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kopf tries to clinch up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Fedor Sakuraba will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Sakuraba wants to control from the top but Kopf keeps moving.

I would just about give that final round to Toten Kopf.
I think Kopf has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
