PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brendan Rodgers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carl Mcfarlane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rodgers's entrance music is Killing In The Name Of. A fine choice. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Brendan Rodgers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Carl Mcfarlane!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Winston Howard and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mcfarlane gets a clinch.
Rodgers is looking to take this one to the mat.
Mcfarlane keeps control of Rodgers as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Mcfarlane unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Rodgers misses with a knee strike.
Rodgers is trying to pull guard but Mcfarlane turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Mcfarlane pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rodgers takes a kick to the side of the head.


It looks like Brendan Rodgers has been cut.

Rodgers rushes Mcfarlane and presses him up against the cage.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Mcfarlane's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Mcfarlane lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Rodgers at a distance.
Rodgers is breathing heavily.
Rodgers avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Rodgers shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Mcfarlane pinned against the cage. Mcfarlane gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Brendan Rodgers. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mcfarlane lands a high kick!

Mcfarlane shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Rodgers's guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Mcfarlane wants to control from the top but Rodgers keeps moving.

Mcfarlane's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Rodgers is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Carl Mcfarlane.
Rodgers moves in looking to clinch but Mcfarlane pushes him off.

Rodgers fails in his attempt to clinch.

Mcfarlane drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Mcfarlane stands up from Rodgers's guard - Mcfarlane perhaps looking for a knockout.
Mcfarlane closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rodgers circles away.
Rodgers throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Mcfarlane.
A head kick by Rodgers misses

and Mcfarlane counters by clinching up.
Rodgers is trying to pull guard but Mcfarlane has him pressed against the cage.

Mcfarlane breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mcfarlane pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Rodgers back to the cage. Mcfarlane follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Mcfarlane has closed the distance and engaged Rodgers in a clinch.
Rodgers has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Mcfarlane after a bit of a struggle.
Mcfarlane lands a body punch.

Mcfarlane gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Rodgers regains guard.
Mcfarlane won't allow Rodgers to get back to his feet.
Mcfarlane really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rodgers. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Rodgers looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mcfarlane is one step ahead there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Mcfarlane decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Rodgers's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Rodgers tries to clinch but Mcfarlane moves out of range.
Rodgers shoots for a takedown but Mcfarlane saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Rodgers doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Mcfarlane shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Rodgers manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Mcfarlane wants to stand but Rodgers has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Mcfarlane wants to control from the top but Rodgers keeps moving.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Mcfarlane won't allow Rodgers to get back to his feet.

Mcfarlane wants to get up but he can't break Rodgers's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Carl Mcfarlane was stalling too much, according to the referee.
The fight stays on the outside here - Mcfarlane looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Mcfarlane shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.

Rodgers tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mcfarlane has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Rodgers's face.
Mcfarlane can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Rodgers is looking to escape.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Rodgers is looking to get to half guard.
Mcfarlane controlling his opponent.
Mcfarlane looking to control but Rodgers is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Carl Mcfarlane hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Mcfarlane turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Mcfarlane closes the distance and clinches up with Rodgers, looking for a takedown. Mcfarlane pushes Rodgers against the cage but Rodgers circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Carl Mcfarlane showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Horrible takedown by Mcfarlane or perhaps it was just good defense by Rodgers which made him look bad.

Rodgers closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Mcfarlane quickly recovers to half guard.
Rodgers stops Mcfarlane from getting back to his feet.
Mcfarlane is looking for a sweep. Rodgers is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Rodgers in particular looking to stall.
Rodgers is trying to control the action in half guard but Mcfarlane is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Brendan Rodgers just wasn't active enough.
Mcfarlane misses with a few strikes there.
Mcfarlane takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Mcfarlane wants to clinch up but Rodgers keeps it at a distance.

Rodgers looks up at the clock and then as Mcfarlane takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Rodgers smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

Rodgers stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Rodgers content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Rodgers lands an elbow.
You can see the frustration on Mcfarlane's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Mcfarlane parries the strikes from Rodgers easily there. Rodgers is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Mcfarlane to escape.
Mcfarlane sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Rodgers thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Rodgers lands with a punch from half guard.

Rodgers seems to be looking for submissions.
Rodgers is thwarting Mcfarlane's attempts to control the position.
Rodgers is taking a breather. Mcfarlane says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Mcfarlane is trying to stand back up but Rodgers is controlling him

And that's the end of the fight!
Brendan Rodgers showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Mcfarlane has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

A very excited looking Carl Mcfarlane rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
