Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brett Yelton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Renzo Rua!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Russell Pearce and Lou da Vinci.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yelton tries to clinch up but Rua circles away and keeps his distance.
Yelton is looking to clinch.

and Rua counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Yelton pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Rua back to the cage. Yelton follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Rua avoids a punch combination nicely.
Yelton slips a jab and a cross from Rua.
Yelton misses with a low kick.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Rua goes for a takedown in the clinch but Yelton prevents it.
Kneeeeees! The crowd are calling for knees to the body. Yelton obliges.

Yelton breaks from the clinch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Yelton misses with a low kick.
Yelton fails with an attempt to clinch.
Rua tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Rua checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Yelton tries to clinch up.

Rua fails with a takedown attempt.

Yelton has managed to clinch.
Yelton lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!

Yelton turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Yelton is breathing heavily.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Rua is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Rua can't do much from the bottom here.

Yelton looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Rua is trying to improve his position.

Rua manages to get back to half guard.
Rua manages to get to full guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rua is on top in guard.
Rua is stalling in the full guard.

Yelton wants to stand but Rua is controlling the position.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Rua landing some decent shots from guard.
Rua trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Rua slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Yelton has momentary wrist control but Rua slips an elbow through the middle.
Rua controlling from the top position.
Rua must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Rua stands and throws Yelton's legs to the side, diving into side control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Rua stands up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Brett Yelton will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Rua shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Yelton avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Rua.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Rua takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Yelton is trying to stand.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rua is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Rua throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Rua trying to control the action but Yelton is working from the bottom.
Rua tries to pass the half guard into mount. Yelton knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Rua works his foot free and advances to mount.
Rua is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Yelton can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rua throws some wild stikes that Yelton manages to avoid easily.
Rua controlling from mount.
Rua's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Rua lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Yelton hang on?

Rua tries to control but Yelton wriggling away.
Rua unloading with bombs!

Rua is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Yelton has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Yelton!
Rua is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rua wants to get back to his feet but Yelton is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Rua is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Yelton defends well.
Rua is pulling down on Yelton's head. It's preventing any offense from Yelton, at least for the moment.
Rua lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Yelton!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Yelton is in a horrible position here. Rua smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Renzo Rua showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Yelton fails in his attempt to clinch.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Yelton, right into the meat.

Rua shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Rua thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Yelton's head.
Renzo Rua has got the better of the ground game so far.
Rua looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Rua is trying to control the action in half guard but Yelton is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Rua wants to work for an arm triangle but Yelton is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rua is taking a breather. Yelton says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Rua gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Yelton throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Rua.
Some bone on bone action there as Rua checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Yelton motions for Rua to come forward. Yelton throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Rua checks a low kick from Yelton.
Yelton closes the distance but Rua moves to the side

and Rua counters with a nice double leg into guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rua won't allow Yelton to get back to his feet.

Rua decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Rua has managed to clinch.
Yelton misses with a knee strike.

Rua pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Rua throws a series of punches but Yelton avoids them all with ease.
Yelton avoids the head kick by Rua.
Brett Yelton is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Yelton circles away from the clinch attempt.
Yelton misses with a head kick.

Rua scores a takedown into full mount!
Rua punishing his opponent with strikes.

Rua controlling the position easily from mount.
Rua can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Yelton is looking to escape.
Rua landing strikes from the mount and Yelton is in trouble!

Renzo Rua comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Rua has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
