PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Juan Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rocky King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Juan Rodriguez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Rocky King!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Sosuke Kotani and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

King shoots in and gets a takedown into Rodriguez's guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

King thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Rodriguez trying to keep a closed guard but King is proving a slippery customer.
King has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Rodriguez is proving hard to escape from.
King trying to control the position from guard on top but Rodriguez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Rodriguez isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. King stacks Rodriguez on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by King!
King wants to control but Rodriguez is keeping him busy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
King tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rodriguez regains half guard.
King tries to stand and escape but Rodriguez is controlling the position.
Rodriguez gets full guard.
King not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Rodriguez is working an open guard so King takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
King keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
King displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Rodriguez.
Rodriguez closes this distance looking for a takedown but King circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Juan Rodriguez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Rodriguez shoots for a takedown but King saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Rodriguez is breathing heavily.

King closes the distance and clinches.
King avoids a wild elbow strike from Rodriguez.

King ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. King no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rodriguez seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
King is pulling down on Rodriguez's head. It's preventing any offense from Rodriguez, at least for the moment.

King looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Rodriguez stands and throws King's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Rodriguez stands up.
King throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rodriguez's waist but Rodriguez gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing King off to one side.

King feints and as Rodriguez raises his hands in defense, King changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
King stops Rodriguez from standing up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
King advances position into side control!

King thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
King tries to advance to mount but Rodriguez denies him.

King tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no King has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rodriguez prevents King from moving into mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rocky King dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


King is looking to clinch but Rodriguez is avoiding it.
King shoots in looking for a takedown but Rodriguez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing King's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
King tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rodriguez swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Rodriguez is looking to land body kicks.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Rodriguez.
No luck for King with that takedown attempt.
King changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rodriguez tries to avoid it but King manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rodriguez to the ground. Rodriguez escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Juan Rodriguez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rocky King.

King is breathing heavily.
Rodriguez is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Rodriguez flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

Rodriguez wants to hold on but King pushes him away.
Rodriguez sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

King is looking for a kimura here.
Rodriguez wants to get back to full guard.
Rodriguez pushes King off looking to stand but King dives back in and keeps control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rodriguez is staying active underneath King, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
King is taking a breather. Rodriguez says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
King is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
King controlling the action here.

Rocky King has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

King clinches.
King stalling in the clinch but Rodriguez improves position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rodriguez tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. King smiles and moves away.

King gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Rodriguez keeps control of King as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Rodriguez escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
King lands a nice hook to Rodriguez's body. Rodriguez takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
King throws a nice inside leg kick.
King throws a series of punches but Rodriguez moves out of range.
Juan Rodriguez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Rodriguez keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Rodriguez fails to land the takedown.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Nice takedown defense from Rodriguez. No joy for King on that attempt.
Rodriguez shoots in looking for a takedown. King tries to sprawl out of it but Rodriguez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. King manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
King tries for a takedown but Rodriguez sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
King swats away the attempt to clinch by Rodriguez.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rodriguez shoots in looking for a takedown but King manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Rodriguez's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Rocky King showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


No luck with that takedown attempt from King.
Horrible takedown by Rodriguez or perhaps it was just good defense by King which made him look bad.
King wants to clinch
and Rodriguez counters with a three punch combo that has King backing up. King nods at Rodriguez to acknowledge the strikes.
Rodriguez shoots in but King avoids the takedown attempt easily.

King darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
King works his foot free and advances to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rodriguez takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
King trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Rodriguez tries to hold on but King pushes him away.
Rodriguez really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
King content just to control the position here.
Rodriguez is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

King wants to control the pace but Rodriguez is squirming around nicely.

Rodriguez tries to hold on but King pushes him away.
King has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Rodriguez's face.
King looking to control but Rodriguez is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
King connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
King wants to control the pace but Rodriguez is squirming around nicely.
Juan Rodriguez has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Rocky King is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Rocky King comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well King has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

In his post fight interview, Rocky King started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
