Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fox Lao (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Phoenix (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Lao might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Terminator T-800 Song. Phoenix has chosen Phoenix as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Fox Lao!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Phoenix!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Alan Glass and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab from Lao misses.
Lao throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Phoenix sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Lao throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Phoenix.


It looks like Paul Phoenix has been cut.

Phoenix shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Lao keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Lao is working hard here to advance position.
Lao holds on to Phoenix around his waist, trying desperately to prevent any attacks.

Phoenix gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks!
Lao throws a lazy head kick

and Phoenix counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Lao!
Phoenix really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lao. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Lao is looking to improve his position but Phoenix isn't that keen on the idea.

Lao is trying to reverse the position but instead Phoenix has taken his back - oops!
Lao is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

The referee is taking a good look at Lao as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from Phoenix!
Phoenix gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.

Watch the back of the head! Comes the shout from the referee towards Phoenix.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Let's hope that Phoenix has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Phoenix lands punches and elbows.
Phoenix connects with a big shot to the side of Lao's head.

What can Lao do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
Phoenix wants to control but Lao is keeping busy.

Phoenix gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes.
Phoenix trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Lao doesn't escape.
Phoenix is hanging on to Lao's back as he tries to escape.
Lao is breathing heavily.
Lao trying to control the hands but Phoenix won't let him.
Phoenix keeps control of the position as Lao tries to break free.

Phoenix controlling well, preventing Lao from escaping the position.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Phoenix is looking to finish with some ground and pound!
Phoenix connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Lao to escape the position.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Can Lao hold on?! Phoenix is landing more strikes to his hapless foe.

Lao is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


No luck with that takedown attempt from Phoenix.

Phoenix closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Phoenix is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Lao will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Lao tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Phoenix wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Phoenix working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Lao is working to avoid the ground and pound but Phoenix connects with a decent elbow.

Phoenix thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Phoenix is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Lao will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Phoenix stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Phoenix throws a right and a left that Lao avoids nicely.
Lao looks to land a combination but Phoenix avoids it well.

Phoenix shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Phoenix has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Phoenix stands up and waves to Lao to follow him.

Phoenix clinches with his opponent.

Phoenix pulls Lao into guard.
Lao stops Phoenix from standing up.
Phoenix is trying to keep Lao in close.
Phoenix looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Phoenix controls Lao momentarily but Lao frees himself.
Phoenix is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Phoenix is nestled in close to Lao, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

Phoenix decides to return to a standing position.
Phoenix fails with a takedown attempt.

Lao gets tackled into the cage by Phoenix. Phoenix maintains the clinch.
Phoenix lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Lao or not.
Lao gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Phoenix.
Fox Lao has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Phoenix.

Phoenix seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Phoenix lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Lao!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Paul Phoenix showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Phoenix closes this distance looking for a takedown but Lao circles away.
Lao misses with a low kick.
Nice sprawl there from Lao as Phoenix shoots in.

Fox Lao has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paul Phoenix.
Phoenix closes the distance and clinches up with Lao, looking for a takedown. Phoenix pushes Lao against the cage but Lao circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Fox Lao seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Lao tries to bum rush Phoenix with a series of wild strikes but Phoenix uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Phoenix drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Phoenix jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Phoenix controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Lao bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Phoenix's guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Phoenix can do anything to dispel that myth.

Phoenix had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Lao defends it easily.

Phoenix cracks Lao with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

Phoenix is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Lao can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Phoenix has hold of Lao's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Lao manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
