PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Vik Mizera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Augusto Borges (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Vik Mizera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Augusto Borges!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Edson Gomes and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Borges wants to clinch

Mizera looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Vik Mizera.
Borges tries to clinch but Mizera moves away

and Mizera counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mizera loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Mizera stays in close to Borges's body and controls the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Vik Mizera.

Mizera shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Borges is trying to defend but Mizera finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Mizera slows the pace down in half guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

We're going to have a standup here because Vik Mizera wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Mizera circles away from the clinch attempt

Borges scores with a shoulder strike.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Borges closes the distance looking to clinch

and Mizera counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mizera.
Mizera wants to pass the guard but Borges is keeping the position.
Mizera engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Vik Mizera just wasn't active enough.
Mizera throws a body punch but Borges moves out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mizera shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Borges sprawls well. Borges wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mizera gets slowly back to his feet.

Borges takes the fight into the clinch.
Borges pushes off an throws an elbow but Mizera leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Mizera jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Borges walks away with a smile on his face. Mizera gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Borges escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Mizera postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Mizera tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Mizera thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Mizera's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Borges doesn't manage to clinch there - Mizera circles away.
Borges fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Mizera drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The referee asks Mizera politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Mizera prefers to stall for the moment though.
Mizera prevents Borges from escaping the position.

Mizera moves into full mount!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mizera controlling the pace for now.
Mizera has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Augusto Borges has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mizera seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Borges for as long as he can get away with.
Vik Mizera overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Vik Mizera just wasn't active enough.

and Mizera counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Mizera is stalling in the full guard.

Mizera throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Borges's waist but Borges gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mizera off to one side.
Mizera takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

and Mizera counters with a single leg into guard. Borges didn't expect that.

Mizera closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Borges did well to prevent Mizera getting side control.

Mizera works his foot free and advances to mount.
Mizera content just to control the position here.

And that's the end of the fight!
Vik Mizera showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Mizera, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
