Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Iwao Kawakami!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Koron Maafi!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Hirohito Nitta and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maafi wants to clinch.
Good work by Kawakami as he checks the leg kick.

Kawakami moves into the clinch.
Maafi can't break the clinch.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Kawakami.
Kawakami tries for a takedown but Maafi manages to get underhooks.
A right handed body shot lands from Maafi.
Kawakami blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Kawakami lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Maafi trying to stall but Kawakami improves his position.
Kawakami lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Maafi or not.
Maafi tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Maafi tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Kawakami just stands there and leans against the ropes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kawakami using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Maafi has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Iwao Kawakami has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Koron Maafi.

Maafi breaks from the clinch.

Kawakami knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Maafi on the ground.
Maafi is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Maafi gets back to full guard.
Kawakami would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Maafi wants to stand and escape but Kawakami is having none of it.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Maafi shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Kawakami counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Kawakami content to control rather than advance.
Kawakami stops Maafi from getting back to his feet.
Kawakami slips a nice elbow through Maafi's hands, connecting with Maafi's forehead.

Maafi makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Maafi.

Maafi wants to get back to his feet but Kawakami is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Maafi bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kawakami's guard.
Kawakami keeping moving, preventing Maafi from controlling successfully.
Kawakami is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Maafi trying to control the position from guard on top but Kawakami is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Maafi gets caught flat footed, as Kawakami shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Kawakami tries to free his leg and advance position but Maafi is retaining full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Maafi stuffs the takedown attempt from Kawakami. Kawakami gets slowly back to his feet.
Maafi closes the distance and clinches up with Kawakami, looking for a takedown. Maafi pushes Kawakami against the ropes but Kawakami circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Kawakami tries for a takedown but Maafi sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Maafi looks frusrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Kawakami will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Kawakami fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Maafi, pushing him back against the ropes.
A right hook to the body lands for Kawakami.
Kawakami gets through Maafi's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
Kawakami avoids the elbow strike from Maafi, against the ropes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Iwao Kawakami dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!


Maafi stuffs the takedown attempt from Kawakami. Kawakami gets slowly back to his feet.
Iwao Kawakami is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Kawakami decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Maafi's guard.
Kawakami wants to control from the top but Maafi keeps moving.
Kawakami stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Maafi swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kawakami prevents Maafi from getting back to his feet.
Kawakami slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Maafi not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Maafi pulls Kawakami in close to prevent any damage.

Maafi has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Kawakami should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Maafi has tightened it up now! Kawakami should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
