PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jason Riddler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mitch Layden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Riddler comes to the cage accompanied by Papa Roach - Getting Away With Murder. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 1 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Jason Riddler!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Mitch Layden!
The judges for this bout are Andrew Berry, Richard Clark and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Riddler drops his hands momentarily and Layden takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Layden shoots in for a takedown but Riddler shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Layden looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Riddler slips under a jab from Layden.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Layden is defended easily by Riddler.
Jason Riddler has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mitch Layden.
Riddler misses with a looping right.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
No joy there for Riddler, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Layden looking to sit in guard and control but Riddler gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Riddler is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Riddler wants to control from the top but Layden keeps moving.
Riddler has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Riddler is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Jason Riddler wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Riddler ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Layden moves away.
Riddler avoids a kick to the body.
Riddler misses with an uppercut.
Layden staying out of range there.
Layden fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Riddler throws a hook but Layden avoids it easily.
Layden moves in looking to clinch but Riddler pushes him off.
Riddler takes one to the chin there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Layden tries to bum rush Riddler with a series of wild strikes but Riddler uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Riddler jabs Layden right on the nose. Layden blinks but takes it well.
Layden fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Riddler avoids it really well and circles away.
Riddler lands the left hand.
Riddler swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Riddler moves into range and connects with a jab.
Layden slips under a jab from Riddler.
Layden walks into a straight right hand from Riddler.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Riddler defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Layden.
Layden tries for a takedown but Riddler sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Riddler throws a right hand that Layden ducks under and follows up with a left that Layden also avoids with ease.
Layden throws a sloppy body shot
and Riddler counters with a nice uppercut.
Riddler throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Layden sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Layden has his takedown stuffed
and Riddler counters with a straight right hand.
Riddler swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Layden counters with a single leg into guard. Riddler didn't expect that.
Layden stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Riddler swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's five minutes gone in the round.
Layden is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Layden seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Layden passes Riddler's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's six minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Layden prevents Riddler from standing back up.
Riddler avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Layden.
Layden thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Riddler's head.
Layden wants to advance to full mount but Riddler doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Layden working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

That's seven minutes gone in the round.
Layden slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Laydenis looking to pass into half guard but Riddler pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Riddler is in guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Riddler looking to sit in guard and control but Layden gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Layden trying to control but Riddler is working from the bottom.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Layden pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Riddler is keeping the position for now.
Layden throwing strikes from guard but Riddler blocks nicely.

Layden drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Riddler manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Layden has Riddler in his guard.
Riddler's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Riddler stands up from Layden's guard - Riddler perhaps looking for a knockout.
Riddler throws a looping overhand right but Layden ducks down to avoid it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
A telegraphed right hand from Riddler misses the target.
Riddler thows a left - swing and a miss!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jason Riddler.
I think Riddler has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
