PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Naytz Pain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Kurosessou (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kurosessou has chosen The Slam as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Naytz Pain!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ben Kurosessou!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Arvi Lind and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Some bone on bone action there as Kurosessou checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Pain closes the distance and clinches up with Kurosessou, looking for a takedown. Pain pushes Kurosessou against the cage but Kurosessou circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Kurosessou gets caught flat footed, as Pain shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pain trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Kurosessou has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pain can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Pain trying to control the position from guard on top but Kurosessou is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pain pushing down on Kurosessou's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
Kurosessou looks gassed!
Pain is looking to stall here but Kurosessou recovers full guard.

Pain gets to his feet - Kurosessou follows without any prompting.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kurosessou gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Pain shoots in for a takedown but Kurosessou shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Pain leaves Kurosessou with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Pain throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Kurosessou's head.

Pain gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Pain misses with a short punch on the inside.
Pain really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Pain tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Kurosessou's elbow.

Pain escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Pain closes the distance and pushes Kurosessou back into the cage.
Pain has Kurosessou pushed against the cage.
Kurosessou is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Pain jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Kurosessou walks away with a smile on his face. Pain gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Naytz Pain. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Kurosessou clinches but Pain breaks the clinch

and Pain counters with a shoot takedown. Kurosessou fights it but they end up in guard.
Pain's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pain trying to control the position from guard on top but Kurosessou is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pain will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Pain got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kurosessou has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pain has managed to get both his arms back between Kurosessou's legs - danger averted.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pain slips nicely into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pain passes the guard and advances to mount!
A nice elbow there by Pain.
Pain can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Kurosessou is looking to escape.
Pain lands a heavy elbow.
Kurosessou tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Pain stands up from mount. Strange move.
Pain tries to clinch but Kurosessou moves away

and Kurosessou counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Kurosessou.

Pain manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kurosessou being controlled here momentarily.
Pain trying to keep a closed guard but Kurosessou is proving a slippery customer.
Kurosessou is fighting to break Pain's control of his arms but Pain is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Kurosessou postures up.
Pain manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Kurosessou manages to get himself to full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kurosessou throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Kurosessou has momentary wrist control but Pain slips an elbow through the middle.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Naytz Pain dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Pain shoots in and bounces Kurosessou off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Pain has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Pain wants to control from the top but Kurosessou keeps moving.
Pain not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Pain throws a big right hand that misses.
Pain throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Kurosessou works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Kurosessou is breathing heavily.
Pain working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Pain wants to stand but Kurosessou has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Pain fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Nice sprawl there from Kurosessou as Pain shoots in.
Pain walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Kurosessou checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Pain tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Kurosessou misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Kurosessou moves into the clinch.
Pain presses Kurosessou against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Pain jumps guard and drags Kurosessou to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Pain is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kurosessou is controlling him.
Kurosessou stopping the sweep attempt from Pain.
Kurosessou trying to control but Pain is working from the bottom.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kurosessou accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Kurosessou avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Pain wants to hit a switch here but Kurosessou passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Pain there!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pain can't escape the position.
Kurosessou is landing with some decent strikes but Pain is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Kurosessou lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Pain flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.

Kurosessou swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Pain is now in Kurosessou's guard. A big mistake from Kurosessou there, giving up the dominant position!

Kurosessou manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pain manages to get himself to full guard.

Kurosessou postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Pain is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Kurosessou, into his guard.
Kurosessou is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Kurosessou keeping moving, preventing Pain from controlling successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pain looking to pass the guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Naytz Pain dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Excellent takedown into side control there by Pain.
Pain wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kurosessou keeps working.
Pain tries to move to mount but Kurosessou blocks the move with his legs.

Kurosessou tries to strike from the bottom but misses.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Kurosessou is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Kurosessou tries to contro but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.

Pain sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Pain trying to control but Kurosessou is having none of it.

Pain looking for a guillotine from mount but Kurosessou is having none of it.
Pain lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pain fails to advance to Kurosessou's back.
Kurosessou is trying desperately to improve position.
Pain postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Kurosessou looks a forlorn figure.
Pain lands a nice shot to the head.
Pain with a couple of short strikes.

Pain stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet.
Pain misses with a takedown attempt

and Kurosessou counters with a nice double leg into guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pain not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Kurosessou content to stall in guard here.
Kurosessou pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Pain is keeping the position for now.
Pain is looking to stand up but Kurosessou isn't so interested in that idea.
Pain is trying to control the position but Kurosessou postures up.
Pain is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Kurosessou is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Kurosessou tries to free his leg and advance position but Pain is retaining full guard.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Pain shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kurosessou pinned against the cage. Kurosessou gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Pain is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Ben Kurosessou has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Pain shoots and misses

and Kurosessou counters with a nice double leg into side control. Pain won't be happy with that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Naytz Pain. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Pain is trying to improve his position.
Naytz Pain overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ben Kurosessou comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Pain has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
