The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Eliza Hachem and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carter misses with a two punch combination.
Carter missing with a left hand there. Penl was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
A looping hook to the body misses from Carter. Penl does a little dance to reset his feet.
Rocco Carter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A slow jab from Carter misses its intended target.
Penl steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Carter.
Penl looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Penl misses with a wild body shot.
Penl takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Carter throws a combination. Penl tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
It looks like Jason Penl has been cut.

Penl scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Carter throws a shot from downtown. Penl moves away and avoids it.
Nice jab there from Carter.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

and Penl counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Penl takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Penl is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Penl is looking to take a break and control but Carter is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Carter can do anything to dispel that myth.
Penl is really struggling to control Carter but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Carter really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penl. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Penl tries to free his leg and advance position but Carter is retaining full guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Penl displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Carter throws out the jab.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Carter closes the distance and clinches up with Penl, looking for a takedown. Carter pushes Penl against the cage but Penl circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Penl seems to be working for a kimura but Carter defends the submission attempt.

Penl has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Penl wants to lay and pray for a moment but Carter keeps working.

Penl takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Carter wants to get back to his feet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Penl works his way into side control.
Carter is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Penl has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Carter defend it? Penl steps over the head and cranks it - Carter is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Penl!
