Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Royce Gracie! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Johnson! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Mauricio Rocha and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Johnson is fending him off so far but Gracie persists. Nope, Johnson circles away and we're back to standing. Gracie closes the distance and clinches up with Johnson, looking for a takedown. Gracie pushes Johnson against the cage but Johnson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Gracie shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Johnson as he avoids it easily. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Royce Gracie. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gracie looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Johnson is looking to clinch. Gracie fails with the takedown. Gracie throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Johnson's waist but Johnson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gracie off to one side. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracie fails to land the takedown. Gracie looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Johnson throws a head kick that misses. Johnson tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Gracie paws at him with a jab and circles away. Johnson connects with a vicious head kick that knocks Gracie to the floor! Johnson dives in looking for the finish!
It looks like Royce Gracie has been cut. Johnson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Johnson tries to stand but his arm is trapped. Gracie is looking for a sweep. Johnson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Johnson is taking a breather. Gracie says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Johnson wants to pass the guard but Gracie is defending well. Johnson decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Johnson wants to clinch up but Gracie keeps it at a distance. Gracie thows a body shot but no joy. Gracie fails to land the takedown. Johnson forces Gracie back against the cage and clinches. Knees to the body from Johnson.
Gracie is breathing heavily. Gracie fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Johnson with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.
Gracie blocks an elbow strike from Johnson.
Johnson misses with a knee strike.

Johnson gets underhooks to prevent Gracie's takedown attempt.
Gracie goes for a takedown attempt but Johnson pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Nice takedown defense from Johnson. No joy for Gracie on that attempt.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Johnson clinches with his opponent.
Johnson lands a damaging elbow. Nice body punch from Johnson. Johnson manages to break the clinch.
Johnson throws the kick towards the body but Gracie avoids it. A head kick by Johnson - that's a beauty! Gracie is out but he's somehow still standing... he's going... going... gone. Like a drunk walking down the middle of the road, the inevitable face plant follows and the delayed knockout arrives. Even Johnson can't help but laugh at the bizarre end to this one!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). John Johnson! John Johnson is the new welterweight champion!
