PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jay Derman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cedrick Barrera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Derman is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. Cedrick Barrera has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jay Derman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cedrick Barrera!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Reed Andrews and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Barrera shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Derman looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Derman has momentary wrist control but Barrera slips an elbow through the middle.
Barrera postures up in Derman's guard and throws a big left but Derman blocks it.

Barrera stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Derman swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Derman could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Barrera thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Barrera keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Derman's head.
Barrera trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Barrera cracks Derman with a solid left hand.
Barrera connects with a couple of short punches.
Barrera wants to stand but Derman has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Barrera drops back looking for a leg! Derman is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Derman manages to kick Barrera off! Barrera jumps back into Derman's guard.

Barrera stands up from Derman's guard - Barrera perhaps looking for a knockout.
Barrera throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.

Barrera fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Derman sprawls well initially but Barrera persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Barrera wants to work for an arm triangle but Derman is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Barrera is looking to take a break and control but Derman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Barrera decides to stand and escape the position.

Barrera darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Barrera thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Derman's head.

Barrera perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Barrera lands a nice short elbow.

Barrera feints and as Derman raises his hands in defense, Barrera changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Barrera wants to get up but he can't break Derman's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Barrera is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Derman's half guard.
Barrera is thwarting Derman's attempts to control the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Barrera throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Derman was covering up waiting for the punch and Barrera finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Barrera slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cedrick Barrera showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Barrera tries to bum rush Derman with a series of wild strikes but Derman uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

Barrera tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Derman keeps control of Barrera as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Barrera gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Still in half guard, Barrera seems content to control.
Barrera wants to lay and pray for a moment but Derman keeps working.
Cedrick Barrera has got the better of the ground game so far.

Derman avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Barrera.

Derman wants to improve his position but Barrera is controlling well.
Barrera trying to control the action but Derman is working from the bottom.
Barrera might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Derman kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Barrera is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Derman sees it coming and defends easily.

and Barrera counters by moving into the clinch.
Derman has Barrera pressed against the cage, preventing Barrera from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Cedrick Barrera is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Barrera turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Barrera manages to end up in side control.
Derman struggling a bit here.
Barrera has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Barrera throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Derman works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.
Derman is trying to get back to full guard.
Jay Derman has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Let's hope that Barrera has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Cedrick Barrera comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Barrera has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
