PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brandon Vera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Vasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vasquez has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tony Vasquez!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vera avoids the head kick by Vasquez.
A combination from Vasquez does no damage.
Vera looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Vasquez lands a jab to Vera's midsection.
Vera shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Vasquez tries to clinch but Vera moves out of range.

Vera closes the distance and clinches.
Vasquez is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Vera escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

and Vera counters with a single leg into guard. Vasquez didn't expect that.

Vera wants to control from the top but Vasquez keeps moving.

Vera sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vasquez's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vera decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Tony Vasquez is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Vasquez throws a right and a left that both miss.
Vera misses with a double jab

and Vasquez counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Vasquez.

Vera pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Vera wants to clinch up but Vasquez keeps it at a distance.

Vasquez closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Vera changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Vasquez fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Vera shoots in for a takedown but Vasquez shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Vasquez can do anything to dispel that myth.

Vera moves in looking to clinch but Vasquez pushes him off.
Vasquez comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Vasquez wants to get back to striking at distance but Vera won't allow it.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Vera tries to close the distance and clinch but Vasquez swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Vasquez leaves Vera with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Vasquez moves in looking to clinch but Vera pushes him off.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Tony Vasquez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Vasquez lands a nice looking body shot.
Vera has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

Vera looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

Tony Vasquez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Vasquez has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
