PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jay Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gomi Takahashi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn comes to the cage accompanied by Pantera - I'm Broken. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jay Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Gomi Takahashi!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Penn really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Penn rushes Takahashi and presses him up against the cage.
Takahashi is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Penn is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Takahashi pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Takahashi is trying to break the clinch but Penn is controlling him.
Takahashi has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Takahashi breaks the clinch.
Takahashi lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Horrible takedown by Takahashi or perhaps it was just good defense by Penn which made him look bad.
Takahashi lands with a slapping head kick.
Penn shoots in but Takahashi avoids the takedown attempt easily.

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into side control. Takahashi won't be happy with that.
Jay Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Gomi Takahashi.

Penn tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Penn is trying to get an arm triangle but Takahashi is defending well.

Penn is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Takahashi is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Takahashi misses with a strike from the bottom.
Takahashi striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Takahashi bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!

Takahashi fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Penn sprawls well initially but Takahashi persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Takahashi prevents Penn from improving his position.
Takahashi not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Penn is defending against the submission attempts here by Takahashi.
Penn is looking for a sweep. Takahashi is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Penn is breathing heavily.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Takahashi is nestled in close to Penn, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Takahashi lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Penn wants to improve his position but Takahashi is controlling well.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Takahashi is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Penn sees it coming and defends easily.
Takahashi prevents Penn from improving his position.
Takahashi thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Takahashi working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Penn's thigh. Penn counters though and makes it back to full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Penn looking for a sweep. Not yet Penn, not yet.
Penn avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Takahashi throwing strikes but missing.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Takahashi with a poor takedown

so Penn counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Takahashi wriggles free and stands up.

Takahashi scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Takahashi is trying to get an arm triangle but Penn is defending well.

Takahashi decides to stand up, so the ref orders Penn to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Gomi Takahashi will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Takahashi is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Penn pulls his head out easily.
Penn passes to side control.
Takahashi takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head.
Penn scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Takahashi to see if he's OK.
Penn wants to control but Takahashi is keeping him busy.
Takahashi sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Takahashi regains full guard. Nicely done.
Penn is looking to work some ground and pound but Takahashi has wrist control.
Penn throwing strikes from guard but Takahashi blocks nicely.
Takahashi trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.

Takahashi escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Penn gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Takahashi is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Penn lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Takahashi flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Penn is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Takahashi moves into full guard.
Penn preventing the sweep.

Takahashi is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Penn is aware though and is defending well.
Takahashi striking off his back but it's not causing Penn any problems.

Penn got a little sloppy there for a moment and Takahashi has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Penn has managed to get both his arms back between Takahashi's legs - danger averted.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Penn connects with a couple of short punches.
Penn has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Takahashi is looking to sinch up a triangle. Penn throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Takahashi's body to avoid the submission. Takahashi has instead reached around Penn's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Takahashi arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:02 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Gomi Takahashi!
