PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Soviet Surrender (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Guy Barandiaran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barandiaran has chosen Sanitarium by Metallica as his entrance music. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Soviet Surrender!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Guy Barandiaran!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Surrender fails with a takedown attempt.
Barandiaran lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Surrender backs up against the cage.

Barandiaran feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Barandiaran working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Barandiaran thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Barandiaran looking to sit in guard and control but Surrender gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Barandiaran tries to roll over but Surrender keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Surrender slows the pace down in half guard.

Surrender tries to stand and escape but Barandiaran is controlling the position.
Barandiaran makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Barandiaran.
Barandiaran looking for a sweep. Not yet Barandiaran, not yet.

Barandiaran pushes Surrender off and gets back to his feet.
Barandiaran has his takedown stuffed

and Surrender counters with a takedown into side control.
Barandiaran holds on to Surrender's head and controls the position momentarily.
Surrender tries to move to mount but Barandiaran blocks the move with his legs.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Barandiaran sneaks out the side door and pushes Surrender away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

and Surrender counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Surrender breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Surrender gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Barandiaran counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Surrender's guard now.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Surrender wants to get back to his feet but Barandiaran is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Barandiaran postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Barandiaran forces his way into half guard.
Surrender makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Surrender.
Surrender will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Barandiaran decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Barandiaran shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Surrender's guard.
Surrender keeping moving, preventing Barandiaran from controlling successfully.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Surrender is on top in guard.

Barandiaran wants to improve his position but instead Surrender has moved into half guard.

Barandiaran wants to get back to full guard.
Barandiaran is not content to let Surrender control the position.
Barandiaran is trying to stand up here but Surrender is controlling him well.
Well, if Surrender is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Surrender is trying to control the action in half guard but Barandiaran is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Surrender working over Barandiaran with some ground and pound. Barandiaran looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Surrender throws a left and a right that both miss

so Barandiaran counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Barandiaran works over Surrender with some ground and pound from guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Barandiaran shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Surrender but Surrender pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Barandiaran is working Surrender over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Barandiaran keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Surrender's head.

Barandiaran lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Surrender is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Surrender working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Barandiaran doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Barandiaran manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Barandiaran with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Barandiaran is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barandiaran perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Barandiaran is trying to control the action in half guard but Surrender is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Surrender is looking to control Barandiaran's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Surrender avoid being mounted?

Surrender has hold of Barandiaran's hands but Barandiaran slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Surrender feints and then cracks Barandiaran's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Barandiaran down.

Surrender is trying to get back to half guard.
Surrender takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Surrender parries the strikes from Barandiaran easily there. Barandiaran is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Surrender to escape.
Surrender looks to move to half guard but instead Barandiaran has passed into mount! Damn!
Surrender is in all sorts of trouble here.
Surrender wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Surrender is trying to escape the mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Guy Barandiaran showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Surrender's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Barandiaran gets the takedown into side control.
Barandiaran is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Barandiaran scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Surrender to see if he's OK.
Surrender avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Barandiaran.

Barandiaran stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Surrender swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Barandiaran moves into the clinch.
Barandiaran tries for a takedown but Surrender manages to get underhooks.
Surrender unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Barandiaran has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Surrender avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Guy Barandiaran is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Barandiaran wants to control from the top but Surrender keeps moving.

Guy Barandiaran comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Barandiaran winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
