PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mikhail Rompevsky (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andy Kaufman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Mikhail Rompevsky!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Andy Kaufman!
The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Konstantin Menshow and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kaufman misses with a two punch combination.

Rompevsky throws a head kick that lands with a deafening thwack! The crowd roars as Kaufman stumbles backwards and falls to the mat. Rompevsky follows into mount!


It looks like Andy Kaufman has been cut.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kaufman is working to get back to half guard.
Kaufman is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Rompevsky has control of Kaufman's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Kaufman regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Rompevsky has hold of Kaufman's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Kaufman manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Rompevsky avoids the attempt from Kaufman to control.

Rompevsky has control of Kaufman's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Kaufman regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rompevsky wants to finish this one by submission but Kaufman is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Rompevsky.

Rompevsky avoids the attempt from Kaufman to control.
Kaufman bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Kaufman wanted to stand there but Rompevsky had control of the position.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kaufman stands up and waves to Rompevsky to follow him.

Kaufman moves into the clinch.
Kaufman throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Kaufman takes an elbow to the forehead.
Rompevsky wants to break the clinch but can't.
Kaufman scores with a shoulder strike.
Kaufman misses with a punch on the inside.
Kaufman lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Rompevsky lands a nice elbow.

Kaufman tries to pull guard but Rompevsky holds him up against the cage and eventually Kaufman drops back down to his feet.
Kaufman pushes Rompevsky back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Rompevsky is trying to break the clinch but Kaufman has him pressed against the cage.
Kaufman lands a left hand that snaps the head of Rompevsky backwards.

Kaufman has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Rompevsky clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Kaufman is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Rompevsky knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Rompevsky for a finish.

Rompevsky trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.

Rompevsky turns into Kaufman and is now in his guard.

Rompevsky drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Rompevsky jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Kaufman lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Rompevsky!
Rompevsky is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Rompevsky manages to regain half guard. Good work.
The fighters are battling for position here. Rompevsky manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Kaufman stands up over Rompevsky, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Kaufman stands up and waves to Rompevsky to follow him.
Rompevsky throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Rompevsky moves out of range of the strikes.
Kaufman is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Rompevsky.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rompevsky throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Kaufman closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rompevsky did well to prevent Kaufman getting side control.
Rompevsky moves into full guard.
Kaufman must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rompevsky tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Kaufman is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Kaufman would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Kaufman drops back looking for a leg! Rompevsky is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Rompevsky manages to kick Kaufman off! Kaufman jumps back into Rompevsky's guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rompevsky is on top in guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rompevsky pushes down on Kaufman's leg and manages to get into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Mikhail Rompevsky will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Andy Kaufman's cut.
That's time! Back to the action!



Kaufman drives through and clinches with Rompevsky against the cage.
Rompevsky can't break the clinch.
Kaufman misses with a hook from the clinch.

Rompevsky breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Rompevsky misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Rompevsky tries to close the distance and clinch but Kaufman swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Kaufman avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Rompevsky throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Kaufman moves into the clinch successfully.

Rompevsky looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Rompevsky is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Kaufman throws a head punch that misses.

Kaufman wants to sweep but no luck.

Rompevsky is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Kaufman doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Rompevsky.

Rompevsky looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Kaufman is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Rompevsky frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Kaufman is looking to improve his position but Rompevsky isn't that keen on the idea.

Rompevsky working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Kaufman regains half guard.
Kaufman wants to improve his position but Rompevsky is controlling well.
Kaufman moves into full guard.

Rompevsky drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Rompevsky seems to have locked his on tight now - Kaufman screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Rompevsky, as he picks up the win!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:47 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). Mikhail Rompevsky!
