PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jay Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Oscar Roberts (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn comes to the cage accompanied by Pantera - I'm Broken. Oscar Roberts will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Oscar Roberts!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Roberts changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.

Penn drives through with a takedown into guard.
Penn working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Penn really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Penn in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Penn trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Roberts utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Penn pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Roberts is keeping the position for now.
Penn with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Roberts is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Roberts shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Roberts showed some decent athleticism there.
Penn is pressing down on Roberts's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Roberts wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.
Penn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Roberts controls the pace.
Penn looking to hit a scissor sweep but Roberts is one step ahead there.

Penn throws his legs up looking for a submission but Roberts uses it to pass to side control.

Roberts working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Roberts tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Roberts is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Penn will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Penn tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Roberts wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Penn sneaks back into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Roberts is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Penn defends it well.
Penn is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Roberts's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Roberts's back!

Roberts defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of Penn's arms.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Penn has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Roberts is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Roberts is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Penn sees it coming and defends easily.
Roberts really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Penn slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Penn lands a good elbow from the bottom.
Penn throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Penn is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Roberts trying to control the position from guard on top but Penn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Penn had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Roberts is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Penn Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Roberts's back instead.
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Penn's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.

Roberts rolls, trying to escape but Penn keeps control of the position.

Penn is trying to stick to Roberts's back but Roberts is turning into Penn. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Penn's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Roberts.
Roberts wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving.
Roberts must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Roberts might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Penn kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Roberts thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jay Penn will probably get the nod.

Penn moves out of range of the strikes.
Roberts shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Penn counters with a three punch combo that has Roberts backing up. Roberts nods at Penn to acknowledge the strikes.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

Roberts scores with a shot to the body.

Penn closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Roberts is looking to regain half guard here but Penn keeps moving and retains side control.
Penn is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Roberts's shoulder. That is not cool.

Roberts is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Penn cracks Roberts with a big elbow.
Roberts tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Penn easily slips into full mount!
Penn will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Oscar Roberts has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
A nice elbow there by Penn.
Penn postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Roberts looks a forlorn figure.

Roberts is still in real trouble! Can Penn finish him?
Roberts takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
A big strike lands for Penn! That's really hurt Roberts and he's turned his back - Penn keeps firing away and the ref dives in to stop the fight! Penn Jumps to his feet to celebrate the victory!
