In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 3 losses; Spud Grubbins! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 0 wins and 4 losses; Trey Moreno! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Stewart Dunkirk and Wesley Smith.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Grubbins scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Grubbins (4) vs (0) Moreno Moreno is looking for a sweep. Moreno is still trying to improve position.
Grubbins is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Moreno knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Moreno tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Grubbins wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Moreno regains half guard.

Moreno looking for submissions off his back. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Moreno can do anything to dispel that myth. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Moreno is controlling Grubbins's trapped leg to prevent Grubbins from advancing to side control. Grubbins wants to take a breather but Moreno is having none of it.

Moreno desperately trying to maintain half guard. Let's hope that Moreno has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Moreno is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Grubbins tries to pass the half guard into mount. Moreno knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Moreno regains full guard. Nicely done.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Moreno seems keen to control Grubbins's posture. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Grubbins drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Grubbins jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Grubbins trying to control but Moreno is working from the bottom. Moreno looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. Moreno tries to land a sweep but no joy. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Moreno is pulling down on Grubbins's head. It's preventing any offense from Grubbins, at least for the moment.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Grubbins trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Grubbins won't allow Moreno to sweep him here. Moreno has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Grubbins looking to pass the guard. Moreno looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Moreno controlling the position. Moreno is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Grubbins trying to control the position from guard on top but Moreno is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Moreno makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Moreno. Grubbins wants to control from the top but Moreno keeps moving. Grubbins won't allow Moreno to sweep him here. Moreno is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Grubbins thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Moreno really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Grubbins. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Grubbins stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Moreno swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Grubbins has gone for a leg lock! Moreno slips out almost immediately though and dives into Grubbins's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Grubbins (4) vs (2) Moreno Moreno is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Moreno stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Grubbins swivels though and keeps the full guard. Moreno keeps trying to improve his position. Moreno controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Moreno must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Moreno got a little sloppy there for a moment and Grubbins has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Moreno has managed to get both his arms back between Grubbins's legs - danger averted. Moreno content to stall in guard here.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. It looks like Moreno might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Moreno pushes down on Grubbins's leg and manages to get into half guard. Moreno works his foot free and advances to mount. Score +3 for passing guard: Grubbins (4) vs (5) Moreno Grubbins stops Moreno from taking his back. Still, being mounted isn't any better.
 That's eight minutes gone in the round. Moreno controlling from mount. Moreno's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Grubbins prevents Moreno from taking his back. Moreno trying to control but he's not successful this time. Moreno content just to control the position here.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Moreno is dominating on the ground here - he's now on his opponent's back, looking to sink in the hooks. Grubbins is in real trouble.
