PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Karl Scholtz (ranked 4844 p4p, 4894 weight class) and Wayne Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Scholtz has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Karl Scholtz has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Karl Scholtz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Wayne Martin!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Fujiwara and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Scholtz fails with a takedown attempt.
Martin tries to counter by closing the distance.
Martin should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Scholtz is breathing heavily.
Martin shoots and misses
and Scholtz counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Martin shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Scholtz sprawls well. Scholtz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Martin gets slowly back to his feet.
Martin misses with a few strikes there.

Martin closes the distance and pushes Scholtz back into the cage.

Martin had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Scholtz defends it easily.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Martin is trying to keep Scholtz in close.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Martin darts in and clinches Scholtz up against the cage.

Martin manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Martin bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Scholtz's guard.

Martin throws a big elbow that misses.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Martin accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Martin is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Martin has eaten all the pies!
Scholtz wants to get back to his feet but Martin passes into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Martin controlling the action here.

Martin is working for a submission of some sort.
Martin working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Martin gets to his feet - back to striking we go!
Martin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Scholtz stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Scholtz wants it to stay on the feet.
Martin feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Scholtzs jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Martin pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Martin dives in and grabs Scholtz's left leg, looking for a takedown. Scholtz pushes down on Martin's head and hops out.
Scholtz keeps the fight on the outside.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Wayne Martin dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Martin drives through and clinches with Scholtz against the cage.
Scholtz can't break the clinch.

Martin jumps into guard, dragging Scholtz to the mat.
Scholtz looking to sit in guard and control but Martin gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Scholtz is looking for a triangle but Martin pushes his legs off easily.
Martin forces his way into half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Martin lands a nice short elbow.
Scholtz avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Martin.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Martin wants to pass the guard but Scholtz is defending well.
Well, if Martin is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight� I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza� Yum. Can't wait.

Scholtz is trying to control Martin's posture but Martin avoids it.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Martin decides to stand back up.
Scholtz keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
It looked like Scholtz wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Martin fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Martin wants to clinch up but Scholtz keeps it at a distance.
Martin shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Scholtz as he jumps to the side.

Scholtz shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Martin defends it nicely.
Martin unleashes a big counter combination but Scholtz bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.

Scholtz really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Martin jumps guard but Scholtz stands there with Martin around his waist. Martin gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Martin is on top in guard.

Scholtz is trying to control the position but Martin postures up.

Martin is pushing down on Scholtz's leg trying to pass to half guard. Scholtz is fighting to maintain full guard but Martin has managed to sneak the leg through.

Martin decides to return to a standing position.
Horrible takedown attempt by Martin or perhaps it was just good defense by Scholtz, which made it look bad.

Scholtz shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Martin as he avoids it easily.

Martin is looking to break free of the clinch but Scholtz has double underhooks.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Wayne Martin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Martin shoots for a double leg takedown but Scholtz sprawls well. He's pushed Martin's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Scholtz misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Martin is taking a breather. Scholtz says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Martin postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Scholtz to stand up.

Martin closes the distance and pushes Scholtz back into the cage.

Martin jumps guard but Scholtz stands there with Martin around his waist. Martin gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Martin pulls Scholtz in close to his closed guard and prevents Scholtz from doing any damage or advancing position.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Scholtz postures up in Martin's guard and throws a big left but Martin blocks it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Martin pushes Scholtz up against the cage in a clinch.
Scholtz on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Scholtz tries for a takedown. No joy.
Scholtz blocks an elbow strike.

A nice left hand lands by Martin.
Martin tries to pull guard but Scholtz holds him up against the cage and eventually Martin drops back down to his feet.
Karl Scholtz has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Wayne Martin is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Wayne Martin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Martin winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
