This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the light heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 8 wins and 8 losses; Steve Fish! And in the blue corner, fighting out of St Petersburg, with a TWGC record of 84 wins and 92 losses; Darragh Fiachna! The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Taro Takaoka and Yuuki Gou.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Fiachna shoots for a takedown but Fish saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Fish attempts a counter takedown but Fiachna avoids it well and moves away. Fiachna is looking to clinch. Fish appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Fiachna tries to close the distance and clinch but Fish swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Fish feinted with a counter takedown. We've been hearing reports that Fish has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Fish closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Fish (2) vs (0) Fiachna Fiachna trying to control but Fish postures up.
Fiachna controlling the position for now. Fish is taking a breather. Fiachna says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Fiachna wants to improve his position but Fish is controlling well.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Fish is looking to advance position but Fiachna won't allow it. Fiachna tries to roll over but Fish keeps him under control. Fiachna regains full guard. Nicely done.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Fish tries to free his leg and advance position but Fiachna is retaining full guard. Fish sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Fiachna's guard. Fish is looking to advance position but Fiachna won't allow it. Fiachna is looking to control Fish's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Fiachna avoid being mounted? The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. The fighters are battling for position here. Fiachna manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Fish is pressing down on Fiachna's thigh, looking to free his foot. Fiachna is holding on for now.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Fiachna wants to improve his position but Fish is controlling well.

 That's four minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Fiachna trying to remain calm as Fish controls from the top position. Fiachna is looking to reverse the position. Fiachna is trying to control Fish's posture but Fish avoids it.
 That's five minutes gone in the round. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Fiachna tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Fish wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Fiachna is not content to let Fish control the position. Fish tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Fish goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Fiachna has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Fish but great work by Fiachna. Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: Fish (5) vs (4) Fiachna
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Fiachna trying to control the action but Fish is working from the bottom. The referee asks Fiachna politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Fiachna prefers to stall for the moment though. Fiachna wants to control but Fish is keeping him busy. Fish seems a little lost for a moment, as Fiachna dominates the positioning.
Fiachna wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Fish, who protects the arm well. Fish struggling a bit here.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. Fiachna trying to control the position but Fish is working away.
 That's eight minutes gone in the round. Fish seems a little lost for a moment, as Fiachna dominates the positioning.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Fiachna wants to lay and pray for a moment but Fish keeps working. Fiachna in side control, just content to control the action for now. Fish is trying to improve his position. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Fiachna working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
 That's ten minutes gone in the round. Fiachna wants to control but Fish is keeping him busy.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Fish regains half guard. Fiachna controlling the pace. Fish wants to get back to full guard. Fish is staying active underneath Fiachna, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Fish is pressing down on Fiachna's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Fiachna wants to control from the top but Fish keeps moving. Fiachna controls from within his opponent's guard. Fish is trying to control the position but Fiachna postures up.
 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Fiachna looking to sit in guard and control but Fish gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Fish (7) vs (4) Fiachna Fiachna not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Fish trying to control the position from guard on top but Fiachna is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Fiachna trying to keep a closed guard but Fish is proving a slippery customer.
Fish wants to control from the top but Fiachna keeps moving. Fish pushes down on Fiachna's leg and manages to get into half guard.
 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Fiachna is not content to let Fish control the position. Fish looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Fiachna is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Fiachna has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Fish is working away from the top position though.
And that's the end of the fight! Fish takes the fight on points by 7 to 4. An out of breath Steve Fish thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career. |
