PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gregory Burton (ranked 4210 p4p, 4204 weight class) and Leonel Sherman (ranked 0 p4p, 396 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gregory Burton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Leonel Sherman!
The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Valeri Chadov and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sherman is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Burton.
Burton's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Burton duly obliges.
Burton moves out of range as Sherman strikes.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Burton!

Sherman is rocked!
Burton throws a series of punches but Sherman avoids them all with ease.
Sherman is still on wobbly legs! Can Burton finish him?
Sherman throws a leg kick but Burton sees it coming and checks it nicely.

Sherman closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Burton did well to prevent Sherman getting side control.
Sherman seems to have recovered his senses.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Sherman perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sherman seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Sherman with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Sherman's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Burton pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Sherman avoids a punch combination nicely.
Leonel Sherman seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Sherman closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Burton quickly recovers to half guard.
Burton scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Sherman manages to mount him!
Sherman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Sherman stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Sherman tries a head kick but it misses.

Sherman fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Burton to the ground. Sherman is now in Burton's guard.
Burton is looking to stand back up but Sherman counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Burton.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Sherman passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Burton!
Sherman controlling the pace for now.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Burton is in a horrible position here. Sherman smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Sherman scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Burton?
Sherman controlling from the full mount.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Leonel Sherman will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.


Burton moves into range and clinches up with Sherman.
Burton looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Sherman pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Gregory Burton is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Burton looks to land a combination but Sherman avoids it well.
Sherman swinging wildly here.
Sherman motions for Burton to come forward. Sherman throws a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Burton has Sherman up against the cage in a clinch.
Burton struggles to land a body shot inside as Sherman controls his hands.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Burton lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Sherman jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Burton walks away with a smile on his face. Sherman gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Sherman misses with a two punch combination.

Burton clinches with his opponent.
Sherman jumps guard but Burton stands there with Sherman around his waist. Sherman gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sherman prevents Burton from breaking the clinch.
A frustrated look appears on Burton's face as he tries to break the clinch.
A battle for position here, against the cage.
Burton lands with a right to the head.
Burton working hard to break the clinch.
Burton is trying to break the clinch but Sherman is controlling him.
Burton is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Burton digs a right hand underneath Sherman's ribcage. Sherman let out a lung full of air as it connected.

Sherman breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Sherman throws a poor cross that misses
and Burton counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sherman throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.

Sherman gets a takedown into half guard.
Sherman works his foot free and advances to mount.
Sherman lands a couple of good shots and Burton has given up his back, trying to escape the position!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sherman has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Burton's body.
Let's hope that Sherman has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Sherman has managed to slip his arm under Burton's chin. This could be all over... yep, Burton is tapping out! Submission win for Sherman.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:33 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Leonel Sherman!
