PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Juan David Franco (ranked 1807 p4p, 1271 weight class) and Nikolai Kaspersky (ranked 220 p4p, 163 weight class). Franco comes into the arena with Bullet For My Valentine- Tears Don't Fall blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Juan David Franco!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Nikolai Kaspersky!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, William Gold and Colin Fotheringham.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A combination from Franco does no damage.
And Kaspersky tries to counter it with a takedown but Franco pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Franco with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Kaspersky to score with a decent uppercut.
Sloppy strikes from Franco. Those never looked like landing.
Franco has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Franco misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Franco throws out a loose jab but Kaspersky uses good head movement to avoid it.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Kaspersky has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
Kaspersky lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Franco throws a series of punches but Kaspersky avoids them all with ease.
Franco throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Franco!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

and Kaspersky counters with a shoot takedown. Franco fights it but they end up in guard.

Kaspersky keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Franco's head.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kaspersky not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Franco wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Kaspersky manages to pass to side control.
Franco on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Franco tries to get out of the position.
Franco on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Kaspersky content to control rather than advance.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Kaspersky connects with a nice short shot to Franco's temple.

Kaspersky lands strikes from half guard.
Kaspersky has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Kaspersky is figuring out what he wants to do next.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kaspersky throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Kaspersky throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Franco was covering up waiting for the punch and Kaspersky finishes the takedown easily into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kaspersky postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kaspersky accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Nikolai Kaspersky dominated that round.
That's time! Franco's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Franco takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Kaspersky digs a good hook to Franco's body.

Kaspersky feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Franco knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kaspersky on the ground.

Nikolai Kaspersky showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Franco throws a sloppy head kick and Kaspersky moves out of range easily.

Kaspersky remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Let's hope that Kaspersky has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
