PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Samson Buddha (ranked 501 p4p, 886 weight class) and Caio Carvalho (ranked 70 p4p, 122 weight class). Carvalho comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Pentagono - É o Moio kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! The key to victory for Samson Buddha has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Samson Buddha!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Caio Carvalho!
The judges for this bout are Topper Green, John Mangel and Ben Watson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Carvalho on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Buddha misses with a hook.
Carvalho cracks Buddha with an open hand slap.
Buddha has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Carvalho staying out of range there.
Buddha tries to work over Carvalho's front leg with a kick but Carvalho checks it.
Buddha slips a jab from Carvalho.
Carvalho ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Buddha moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carvalho on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Carvalho tries to score a power double leg takedown but Buddha sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Carvalho somewhat.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Carvalho moves out of range of the strikes.
Carvalho feints the counter takedown.
Carvalho moves away from the strike by Buddha.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Buddha lands a kick to the ribs of his opponent. Nice work there - in and out in a flash.
Carvalho throws a hook but Buddha blocks it.
Buddha scores with a jab to the body.
Buddha throws a head kick that misses.
Buddha takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Buddha throws a lazy right hand but Carvalho sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Carvalho swings widly with a right hand
and Buddha cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Carvalho takes one to the side of the head.
Carvalho misses with a lunging right hand
and Buddha counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Carvalho is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Buddha tries to score with a low kick but Carvalho moves his leg out of the way.
Buddha misses with a body shot.
A low kick from Buddha is predictable there

and Carvalho counters with a takedown into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Buddha can't do much from the bottom here.
Carvalho is looking to take a break and control but Buddha is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Carvalho tries for a kimura but Buddha is defending well.
Buddha struggling a bit here.
Buddha is trying to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Carvalho tries to advance to mount but Buddha instead regains half guard.
Carvalho throwing shots but Buddha is blocking nicely.
Carvalho wants to control but Buddha is keeping him busy.

Carvalho is looking for a kimura but Buddha is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Carvalho to get the leverage.
Buddha has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Carvalho is working away from the top position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Buddha manages to get to full guard.
Carvalho is fighting to break Buddha's control of his arms but Buddha is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Samson Buddha dominated that round.
That's time! Back to the action!

Buddha misses with a hook

and Carvalho decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Buddha's guard.
Buddha is pulling down on Carvalho's head. It's preventing any offense from Carvalho, at least for the moment.

Carvalho drops back looking for a leg! Buddha is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Buddha manages to kick Carvalho off! Carvalho jumps back into Buddha's guard.

Carvalho drops back, looking for a kneebar! Buddha looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Buddha looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Buddha!

Carvalho tries to buck Buddha off but Buddha is having none of it.
Buddha tries to advance to mount but Carvalho denies him.

Buddha remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Carvalho tries to improve position but can't.
Carvalho is not content to let Buddha control the position.
Carvalho is looking to regain half guard here but Buddha keeps moving and retains side control.
Carvalho felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Caio Carvalho has got the better of the ground game so far.
Carvalho manages to work his way to half guard, despite Buddha's best efforts.
Carvalho wants to get back to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Carvalho is looking to regain full guard. He's left an arm up in the air though and Buddha has latched onto it... Big trouble! Buddha pivots for an armbar - it's in tight and it Carvalho is tapping in no time flat! Great counter grappling there from Buddha!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:19 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Samson Buddha!
