PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sam Diego (ranked 2938 p4p, 2522 weight class) and Jim Duggan (ranked 380 p4p, 334 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Sam Diego has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Sam Diego seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sam Diego!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 11 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jim Duggan!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Colin Fotheringham and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Duggan looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Diego!
Diego wants to control but Duggan postures up.
Diego's coaches at New York Public Gym have been working on his defensive grappling in preparation for this fight so let's see if he can get out of this tricky position.
Duggan is looking to take a break and control but Diego is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Duggan tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
Duggan looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Diego is avoiding damage well.
Duggan creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Diego sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Diego is not content to let Duggan control the position.
Diego parries the strikes from Duggan easily there. Duggan is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Diego to escape.
Duggan laying and praying for a moment but Diego takes advantage and regains half guard.
Still in half guard, Duggan seems content to control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Diego throws a nice outside leg kick.
Duggan pivots, looking for a leg kick but Diego is out of range and Duggan settles back down.

Diego missing with a left hand there. Duggan was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Duggan scores with a hook to the body. Diego takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Duggan throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Duggan connects with a looping right hand.
Duggan pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Diego back to the cage. Duggan follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Diego swings for the body but Duggan moves out of range.
Diego misses with a hook. Duggan ducked under it nicely.
Diego lands with a hook. Duggan tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Duggan takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.

Sam Diego seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Duggan uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Diego.
A countering left hand to the body from Duggan misses.

Diego throws a body shot but no joy.
Duggan throws a quick inside leg kick.
Duggan is looking to clinch.
A counter left hand to the body from Diego misses its target.
Duggan throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
A telegraphed right hand from Duggan misses the target.

Duggan fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Diego, pushing him back against the cage.
Diego tries to work over Duggan's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Diego.
Nice body punch from Duggan - that landed with a thud.
Diego tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Duggan's elbow.

Duggan throws a head punch that misses.
Duggan lands with a short head shot on the inside.
Duggan lands an uppercut.
Duggan misses with a punch on the inside.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Diego.

Diego struggles to land a body shot inside as Duggan controls his hands.
Diego is pressed up against the cage. Duggan has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Diego down to the mat. Diego avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Duggan takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.
Duggan throws a body punch but Diego moves out of range.
Diego chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Duggan can pounce on him.
Diego smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Duggan lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.

Duggan clinches.
Diego lands with a short punch from the clinch.

Duggan manages to break the clinch.
Duggan keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Diego ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Duggan moves away.
Duggan steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Diego.
Diego misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Duggan.

Duggan stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Duggan feints and as Diego raises his hands in defense, Duggan changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Duggan scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Diego to see if he's OK.
Diego is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Diego is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Duggan's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Duggan's back!
Diego doesn't have the hooks in and Duggan manages to turn into his guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Duggan's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Duggan must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Duggan is looking for a triangle but Diego pushes his legs off easily.

Duggan is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Diego defends well.
Duggan has a closed guard, preventing Diego from standing up.
Diego wants to stand and escape but instead Duggan has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Duggan's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jim Duggan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Diego moves away from the strike by Duggan.
Duggan fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Diego.
Nice straight punches there by Duggan. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Duggan.
Diego is looking to wear down Duggan with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Diego misses with a series of wild punches.

Duggan thuds a left hand into Diego's body.
Duggan looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Diego takes a swing at Duggan's ribcage but misses.
Duggan let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
Duggan has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Duggan cracks Diego with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.

Duggan throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Diego works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.

Duggan is working for a kimura but Diego is defending it quite comfortably.

Duggan is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Diego doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Duggan.

Duggan maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Diego could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Duggan has cracked it and Diego is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Duggan!
