PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nord Licht (ranked 332 p4p, 501 weight class) and Peter Kowalski (ranked 50 p4p, 71 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Nord Licht has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Nord Licht seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nord Licht!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Peter Kowalski!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Aleksandr Martynov and Valeri Chadov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kowalski shoots in looking for a takedown. Licht tries to sprawl out of it but Kowalski keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Licht manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Licht throws a big counter combination but Kowalski scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Licht has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

Kowalski shoots in and gets a takedown into Licht's guard.

Licht has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Kowalski off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Licht uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Kowalski.
Licht throwing a counter right hand but Kowalski manages to avoid it.

It looks like Nord Licht has been cut.
Licht rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Kowalski moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Kowalski throws a right hand that Licht ducks under and follows up with a left that Licht also avoids with ease.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Kowalski swings for the body but Licht moves out of range.
Kowalski is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Licht.
Kowalski looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Kowalski avoids the body shot from Licht.
Licht looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Kowalski moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Kowalski stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Kowalski misses with a hook
and Licht connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Kowalski throws a jab but it's blocked by Licht.
Kowalski shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Licht pinned against the cage. Licht gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Licht seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Nord Licht has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Peter Kowalski.
Licht throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Licht connects with a body shot that sends Kowalski's belly button to the back.
Kowalski doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Licht connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Kowalski connects with the punch.
Kowalski uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Licht.
Kowalski takes a kick to the side of the head.
Kowalski looks to score with a jab to the body but Licht is just out of range.
Licht wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Kowalski throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Kowalski looks for a takedown but Licht sprawls well.
Licht is looking to counter punch.
Kowalski misses with a right hand
and Kowalski takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Kowalski displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Licht throws out the jab.

Kowalski misses with a lunging right hand
and Licht counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Kowalski thinking.

Licht lands a big head kick that sends Kowalski tumbling to the mat! Licht takes a step backwards and waves Kowalski back to his feet - he wants the finish!

Kowalski is rocked!
Licht keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Kowalski.
Kowalski is still on wobbly legs! Can Licht finish him?
Licht throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Kowalski seems to have recovered his senses.
Licht throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Licht fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Licht enables Kowalski to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Licht manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
This has been an exciting period of action!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Licht pushes Kowalski off and gets back to his feet.
Licht is looking to wear down Kowalski with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Licht lands an overhand right.

Kowalski missing with a left hand there. Licht was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Licht lands a big head kick that sends Kowalski tumbling to the mat! Licht takes a step backwards and waves Kowalski back to his feet - he wants the finish!

It looks like Peter Kowalski has been cut.
Kowalski darts in looking for a takedown but Licht gets double underhooks and turns Kowalski into the cage.
Licht misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Kowalski steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Licht. That one must have hurt.
A punch combination from Licht misses.
Kowalski uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Licht.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Kowalski connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Kowalski scores with a jab to the head.
Licht lands a nice leg kick that just misses Kowalski's sensitive parts.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Nord Licht dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Kowalski dodges the punch combination from Licht.
Kowalski tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Licht fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Kowalski, pushing him back against the cage.

Licht pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Licht will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Licht is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Licht misses with a double jab.
Licht looks to land a left hand but Kowalski moved out of range nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kowalski will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Peter Kowalski seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Licht keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Licht works on Kowalski's body with a couple of short punches.
Licht is pushing Kowalski up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Licht here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Kowalski is breathing heavily.
A nice right hand lands inside from Licht.
Kowalski goes for a takedown attempt but Licht pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Kowalski wants to take the fight to the mat but Licht manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Licht just leaning against Kowalski, taking a breather.
Licht seems to have come into the fight with the intention of avoiding any damage in the clinch, rather than actually showing any aggression.

Licht is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kowalski can do to turn this around?
With the fighters clinched against the cage, Licht creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.

Licht manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Nice body punch from Licht - that landed with a thud.
Licht digs a right hand underneath Kowalski's ribcage. Kowalski let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Licht lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Licht lands a right hand that snaps the head of Kowalski backwards.
Licht pushes Kowalski back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Licht lands with a short shot to the head.
Licht lands a shoulder strike.
Licht dips a shoulder and cracks Kowalski with a mighty uppercut! Kowalski falls back against the cage and Licht unloads with a barrage of strikes! Kowalski is completely out with his eyes open, only supported by the cage! Save him ref! Eventually the ref decides to do his job and jumps in - Licht screams abuse at the incompetent official before going over to celebrate with his corner. Brutal stuff!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:22 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Nord Licht!
Nord Licht retains his heavyweight title!
An out of breath Nord Licht thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
