PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Eddie Ryan (ranked 1289 p4p, 2285 weight class) and Guy River (ranked 164 p4p, 269 weight class). River has chosen Gabon National Anthem as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Eddie Ryan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 25 - 18 - 0, fighting out of New York, Guy River!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, James Glass and Paul Tew.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
River misses with a hook.
Good shot there by Ryan.
River thows a left - swing and a miss!
River drops his hands momentarily and Ryan takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.
Jab by Ryan.
River throws a head kick that misses.
River lands a glancing blow to the side of Ryan's head.
Ryan ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Ryan moves out of range of the body kick from River.
River misses with a shot to the body
and Ryan counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Ryan throws a body punch but River moves out of range.
River throws a counter combo.
Ryan works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
River thows a left - swing and a miss!
Ryan misses with an uppercut.
Ryan moves away from the strike by River.

River tries to move into range but Ryan moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
Nice body punch from Ryan.
We've been informed that River has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result.
River drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Ryan misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from River.
Ryan throws a body shot but no joy.
Ryan looks to throw the jab but River is out of range.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from River lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Ryan has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Ryan and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Ryan tries to counter with a takedown but River is quick to defend against it.

Ryan blocks the body kick.
Nice defenses there by River.
River doesn't fully commit to the body shot counter.
Guy River is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A telegraphed right hand from River misses the target.
River misses the shot to the body.
Ryan tries to counter with a takedown but River is quick to defend against it.
We've been hearing reports that Ryan has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
River looks to land a combination but Ryan avoids it well.
Ryan uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before River has time to react.

The fighters circle momentarily. Ryan darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

River ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Ryan closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Ryan thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Ryan tries for a kimura but River is defending well.
River really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ryan. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

River pushes Ryan away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Ryan gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Ryan wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by River, who protects the arm well.
River is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Ryan has just dragged him back down to the mat.
River is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Eddie Ryan dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

River lands a front kick.
River pivots, looking for a leg kick but Ryan is out of range and River settles back down.
River misses the shot to the body.
Ryan misses with a straight right.
River replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Ryan blocks it well.
River slips under a jab.
River walks into a left hand.
River missing with a left hand there. Ryan was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Ryan connects with a crisp jab.
Ryan moves out of range as River strikes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
River misses with a kick to the body
and Ryan counters with a straight right hand.

A looping hook to the body misses from River. Ryan does a little dance to reset his feet.

Ryan throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around River's waist but River gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ryan off to one side.

Ryan is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that River can do to turn this around?
River takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Ryan takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Ryan looks to score with a jab to the body but River is just out of range.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if River can do anything to dispel that myth.

River is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Ryan asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Ryan tries to advance to mount but River instead regains half guard.

Ryan seems to be working for a kimura but River defends the submission attempt.

Ryan is sneakily working for an arm triangle but River sees it coming and defends easily.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Ryan seems to be looking for submissions.

Ryan looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
River wants to get back to his feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

River lands a really nice looking cross but Ryan seems unphased.

Ryan is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by River.
Ryan thuds his right hand into River's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

River throws a hook to the side of Ryan's head but Ryan sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
River throws a big shot that misses.

Ryan uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by River.
Ryan works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.
River sizes up Ryan with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.
Ryan uses good head movement to avoid the hook from River.
River throws the kick towards the body but Ryan avoids it.

Eddie Ryan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
River gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.

River is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Ryan with a body shot.

Ryan throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
River has a pretty nasty looking mouse under his right eye.
River doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
River looks for the body kick but Ryan saw that one coming.
River displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Ryan.
Ryan swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
River with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Some bone on bone action there as Ryan checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
River pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
River looks to throw the jab but Ryan is out of range.
River looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Guy River has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

River will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Ryan steps to the side to avoid the strikes from River.
Ryan misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from River.
Ryan uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from River.
Ryan half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Ryan thows a left - swing and a miss!
River tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Ryan is able to avoid easily.

Ryan cracks a nice hook into River's ribs.

Ryan has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from River.

Ryan shoots in and bounces River off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Eddie Ryan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Ryan drops back looking for a leg! River is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and River manages to kick Ryan off! Ryan jumps back into River's guard.
River is wriggling around but Ryan manages to pass to half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Guy River.
Well Ryan has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
