PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Curtis Rome (ranked 817 p4p, 2126 weight class) and Rick Segura (ranked 116 p4p, 270 weight class). Segura has chosen Mystic Rick - Press Conference as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 14 - 3, fighting out of Amsterdam, Curtis Rome!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rick Segura!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Valeri Chadov and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rome fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Rome enables Segura to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Rome manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Rome isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Segura stacks Rome on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Segura!

Rome might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Segura might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Rome haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Segura cracks Rome with a big right hand but Rome just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Segura wants to free his trapped foot but Rome is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Rome looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Segura pushes past his half guard into mount!
Rome is wriggling around trying to escape.
Rome wants to control but Segura is having none of it.
Rome sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Segura lands a nice short elbow.
Segura is controlling the pace.
Rome is looking for a sweep. Segura is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Rome looking for submissions off his back.
Rome tries to roll over but Segura keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rome is in trouble now - Segura has advanced to mount!
Segura connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Rome tries to hold on but Segura pushes him away.
Rome tries to reverse the position but Segura maintains control.
Rome is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at MMA Training and Sparring Buddies, so we'll see if he gets out of it.

Rome wants to control but Segura is having none of it.

Rome sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Rome manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Segura trying to control but Rome is working from the bottom.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rome is on top in guard.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Segura holds on and takes a little breather.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Segura is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Rick Segura dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Segura displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Rome.

Segura feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Rome looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Segura has picked Rome up and slammed him! Rome can't keep hold of the triangle and Segura manages to pass to side control!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Rome is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Segura is aware though and is defending well.

Segura got a little sloppy there for a moment and Rome has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Segura has managed to get both his arms back between Rome's legs - danger averted.
Rick Segura has got the better of the ground game so far.
Segura content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Rome has his foot on Segura's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Segura works his way back into a safe position though.

Segura is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Rome tries to get to full guard but Segura has control of the leg.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Rick Segura showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Rome moves out of range of the strikes.
As Segura tries to get set, Rome tries to push him back and clinch up but Segura manages to avoid the attempt.

Rome drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Rome tries to advance to mount but Segura instead regains half guard.

Rome has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Segura defend it? Rome steps over the head and cranks it - Segura is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Rome!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:25 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Curtis Rome!
An out of breath Curtis Rome thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
