PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ricky Alvarez (ranked 2631 p4p, 4840 weight class) and Terry Ryan (ranked 317 p4p, 461 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Terry Ryan was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ricky Alvarez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Terry Ryan!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, David Schapiro and John Kavanagh.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alvarez lands with a nice combination. Ryan backs away looking to recover.
Alvarez keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Alvarez lands with a shot to the body.
Alvarez looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.

Alvarez stalks Ryan and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Ryan's face. Ryan staggers backwards, shaken.
Alvarez will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Alvarez's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Alvarez duly obliges.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ryan fails with the takedown
and Alvarez cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Alvarez fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Ryan looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Alvarez connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Ryan misses with a lunging right hand
and Alvarez counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Alvarez fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Ryan feints the counter takedown.
Alvarez defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Ryan.

Alvarez drops Ryan with a right and a left! Alvarez comes rushing in but Ryan regains his composure and manages to keep Alvarez in guard.

Ryan is rocked!
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Ryan holds on and takes a little breather.
Ryan is still in real trouble! Can Alvarez finish him?
Ryan is continuing to stall.
Ryan seems to have recovered his senses.

Ryan manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Alvarez manages to get himself to full guard.

Alvarez wants to get back to his feet but Ryan is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Alvarez closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Ryan fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Ricky Alvarez has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Terry Ryan.
Ryan misses with an uppercut
and Alvarez counters with a two punch combo.

Ryan shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Alvarez is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Ryan is fighting to break Alvarez's control of his arms but Alvarez is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Ryan forces his way into half guard.
Alvarez is controlling Ryan's trapped leg to prevent Ryan from advancing to side control.
Ryan seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Alvarez scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Ryan feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Ryan throws a strike but Alvarez rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Alvarez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Alvarez has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Ryan is proving hard to escape from.

Alvarez stands and steps away. Ryan gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Alvarez lands a nice shot that snaps Ryan's head back.
Ryan shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Alvarez lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Ryan circles away quickly and effectively.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Alvarez leaves Ryan with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Alvarez throws a combination. Ryan tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Alvarez goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.
Alvarez connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Alvarez throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Ryan ducks right into an uppercut from Alvarez.

Alvarez lands a left and a right that sends Ryan crashing to the canvas! Alvarez dives into mount looking to finish!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Ryan regains half guard.

Alvarez stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Ryan is breathing heavily.
Donk. Alvarez catches Ryan right on the button with a cross.
A nice leg kick lands there from Alvarez.
Alvarez misses with a wild combination.

Alvarez misses with a series of wild punches.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
A left and a right from Alvarez both land. Nice combination.
Ryan throws a hook but Alvarez blocks it.
Alvarez lands a two punch combo.
Ricky Alvarez is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
That kick from Alvarez tenderised Ryan's leg. Ryan is trying to keep his angry face on.
Alvarez connects with a right that clearly hurt Ryan. He's backed up against the cage with nowhere to go as Alvarez proceeds to tee off with vicious combinations till Ryan collapses and taps out under the pressure!
