PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Arturo Caldeira (ranked 2376 p4p, 1771 weight class) and Jim Reefer (ranked 312 p4p, 236 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Arturo Caldeira!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jim Reefer!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reefer fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.

It looks like Arturo Caldeira has been cut.
A head kick by Reefer misses

and Caldeira counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Reefer is trying to maintain the position but Caldeira is very close to passing his half guard.
Reefer is staying active underneath Caldeira, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Reefer wants to get back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Reefer won't allow Caldeira to pass to mount.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Reefer is looking to improve his position.

Caldeira is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Reefer defends it well.

Caldeira trying to mount his opponent but Reefer defends it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Jim Reefer is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A nice leg kick from Reefer, right into the meat of the thigh.
Reefer has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.

Caldeira throws an off balance right hand
and Reefer counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Reefer throws the left hand but Caldeira avoids the punch easily.
Caldeira lands with an uppercut that bounces Reefer off the cage and back into range.
Nice takedown defense from Reefer. No joy for Caldeira on that attempt.
Reefer cracks Caldeira with a good jab.
Reefer lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.

Caldeira tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Reefer defends well and Caldeira ends up having to push Reefer into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Caldeira just misses with a elbow thrown towards Reefer's brow.
Reefer lands a right hand that snaps the head of Caldeira backwards.
Reefer tries to throw a body punch but Caldeira avoids it by throwing Reefer back against the cage.
Reefer goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Reefer tries to work over Caldeira's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Caldeira tries to stall but Reefer uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Reefer blocks an elbow strike.
Reefer pushes Caldeira back against the cage and unloads with a body punch.
Reefer on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Reefer misses with the head strike.
A short right from Reefer on the inside.
Reefer is leaning against Caldeira and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Caldeira's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!

Caldeira has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Reefer avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Reefer is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Caldeira uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Reefer.
Caldeira wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Caldeira steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Reefer.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Reefer enables Caldeira to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Reefer manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Caldeira seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Reefer can do anything to dispel that myth.
Reefer has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Caldeira is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Reefer sees it coming and defends easily.
Reefer keeping control of the position.
Caldeira wants to free his trapped foot but Reefer is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Caldeira throwing shots but Reefer is blocking nicely.
Reefer is staying active underneath Caldeira, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Reefer really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Caldeira. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Reefer looking to hit a scissor sweep but Caldeira is one step ahead there.
Caldeira stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Reefer swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Caldeira looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Reefer throws the left hand but Caldeira avoids the punch easily.
Caldeira throws a combination. Reefer tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Caldeira misses with a wild body shot.
Reefer shapes to counter with a head kick.
Reefer throws a leg kick that misses.
Reefer showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Caldeira.

and Caldeira takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Nice defenses there by Caldeira.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Caldeira.
Caldeira tries to score a power double leg takedown but Reefer sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Caldeira somewhat.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Reefer! But no joy.

Reefer fakes the leg kick and cracks Caldeira in the body.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Reefer moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Reefer lands a really nice looking cross but Caldeira seems unphased.
Arturo Caldeira seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Reefer tries a head kick but it misses.
Caldeira has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Reefer finds it's way round the side to connect with Caldeira's head.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Reefer lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Caldeira misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Reefer.
Caldeira moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Jim Reefer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Reefer throws a lazy right hand but Caldeira sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Caldeira throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Reefer dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Caldeira. That did some damage!

Caldeira takes one on the button.
Reefer fakes a right and follows up with a big left that drops Caldeira to one knee - oooooh, he's wobbly! Caldeira looks to clinch but Reefer throws him off and pummels him into the canvas! Caldeira taps out under the strikes! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Jim Reefer!
After winning the bout, Jim Reefer thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
