PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jake Askren (ranked 1560 p4p, 1823 weight class) and Paulo Roberto (ranked 136 p4p, 165 weight class). Roberto has chosen Samba de Roda as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 13 - 1, fighting out of London, Jake Askren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 2, fighting out of Tokyo, Paulo Roberto!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Robert Douchet and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Askren dives in for a single leg takedown but Roberto sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Roberto is pressed up against the cage. Askren has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Roberto down to the mat. Roberto avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Roberto connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Roberto leaves Askren with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Roberto looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Askren. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A jab from Roberto does it's job there.
Askren shoots for a takedown but Roberto saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
A looping hook to the body misses from Roberto. Askren does a little dance to reset his feet.
Roberto takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Askren tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Roberto manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Askren ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Askren shoots in for a takedown but Roberto shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Roberto takes the fight into the clinch.
Roberto tries to throw a body punch but Askren avoids it by throwing Roberto back against the cage.

Askren gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Roberto regains guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Askren throws a big right hand that misses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Roberto is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Askren is controlling him.
Askren makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Askren postures up in Roberto's guard and throws a big left but Roberto blocks it.
Askren scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Roberto has his feet on Askren's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Roberto lands a really nice looking cross but Askren seems unphased.

Roberto moves into range and clinches up with Askren.
Roberto lands a shoulder strike.
Roberto lands a nice uppercut.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Roberto misses with a hook from the clinch.
A head punch on the inside from Roberto fails to land.
Askren blocks a body shot from Roberto.

Askren is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Roberto pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Roberto pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.

Askren has hold of one of Roberto's legs. Roberto is fighting the takedown attempt but Askren gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Askren postures up in Roberto's guard and throws a big left but Roberto blocks it.
Askren stops Roberto from standing up.
Askren is looking to work some ground and pound but Roberto has wrist control.
Askren trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Askren lands a couple of digs.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Askren accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Askren has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Roberto utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Askren lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Askren throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Askren throws a strike but Roberto rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Roberto trying to stand up but can't free himself from Askren's guard.
Askren pulls Roberto in close to prevent any damage.
Roberto is looking to stand up but Askren won't let him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Roberto preventing the sweep.
Roberto trying to stand up but can't free himself from Askren's guard.
Askren wants to sweep here but Roberto controlling him for the moment.
Roberto would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Paulo Roberto dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Askren tries to move into range but Roberto moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

Roberto closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Roberto can't find room to land a body shot as Askren controls the action.

Roberto lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.

Roberto breaks the clinch.

Roberto closes the distance and clinches.

Roberto manages to break the clinch.
Askren moves out of range of the strikes.

Roberto fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Askren, pushing him back against the cage.
Askren is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Roberto is defending well.

Roberto breaks from the clinch.
Paulo Roberto seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Roberto works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.

Roberto gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Roberto scores with a shoulder strike.

Roberto's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Roberto moves into range and clinches up with Askren.

Askren escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Paulo Roberto seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Askren fails with an attempt to clinch.

Askren scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Roberto is pushing Askren's head away, looking to escape. Askren manages to hold on to the position though.
Askren tries to move to mount but Roberto blocks the move with his legs.
Roberto has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Roberto wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Askren creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Roberto sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Askren throwing shots but missing, from side control.
Askren throws a strike aimed at the side of Roberto's head but Roberto avoids it well.
Askren has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Roberto!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Askren misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Roberto is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Roberto takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Askren pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.

A big strike lands for Askren! That's really hurt Roberto and he's turned his back - Askren keeps firing away and the ref dives in to stop the fight! Askren jumps to his feet to celebrate the victory!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jake Askren!
A very excited looking Jake Askren made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
