PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Gaultier Girard (ranked 944 p4p, 1183 weight class) and Ilya Kushnirov (ranked 138 p4p, 171 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 36 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gaultier Girard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 14 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ilya Kushnirov!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Sosuke Kotani and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Girard looks to land a combination but Kushnirov avoids it well.

Girard gets a takedown into half guard.
Kushnirov is looking for a sweep. Girard is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Kushnirov is controlling Girard's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Girard will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kushnirov tries to roll over but Girard keeps him under control.

Girard feints and as Kushnirov raises his hands in defense, Girard changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Kushnirov is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Girard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kushnirov rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Girard moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Girard shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kushnirov's guard.
Kushnirov tries to land a sweep but no joy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Kushnirov seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Kushnirov will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Girard closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Kushnirov tries to roll over but Girard keeps him under control.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Girard looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

Girard throws a sloppy strike and Kushnirov has hooked up an armbar on the loose arm! He's turned and extended fully! Girard is forced to tap! Great BJJ from Kushnirov!
